Story
No strangers to evil, criminal profiler Reni Fisher and detective Daniel Ellis both still grapple with traumatizing pasts. It unites them. So has a crime they must solve before someone else dies. At a campsite on California’s Pacific Crest Trail, a guide is murdered and three young hikers vanish without a trace. The only lead is a puzzle in itself: a video of the crime scene, looking eerily staged, uploaded to social media. The girl who posted it can’t be found. Is it a viral hoax gone unspeakably wrong, or is there something more sinister at play in the forest?

No one is more familiar with Savannah's dark side than homicide detective and native resident Elise Sandburg. She's been haunted for years by her own mysterious past: She was abandoned as a baby in one of the city's ancient cemeteries, and it’s rumored that she is the illegitimate daughter of an infamous Savannah witch doctor. The local Gullah culture of voodoo and magic is one that few outsiders can understand, least of all Elise’s new partner.

Publisher's Summary
An Amazon Charts best seller
A bone-chilling family history is unearthed in a heart-stopping thriller by New York Times best-selling author Anne Frasier.
Convicted serial killer Benjamin Fisher has finally offered to lead San Bernardino detective Daniel Ellis to the isolated graves of his victims. One catch: He'll only do it if FBI profiler Reni Fisher, his estranged daughter, accompanies them. As hard as it is to exhume her traumatic childhood, Reni can’t say no. She still feels complicit in her father’s crimes.
Perfect to play a lost little girl, Reni was the bait to lure unsuspecting women to their deaths. It's time for closure. For her. For the families. And for Daniel. He shares Reni's obsession with the past. Ever since he was a boy, he's been convinced that his mother was one of Fisher's victims.
Thirty years of bad memories are flooding back. A master manipulator has gained their trust. For Reni and Daniel, this isn't the end of a nightmare. It's only the beginning.

Nature vs nurture...
This is the first book in a new series from Ann Frazier. The protagonist in this series is Reni Fisher. She’s the daughter of a serial killer responsible for the murder of at least 30 women.
Reni, an FBI profiler chose to leave law enforcement after she began getting flashbacks and hallucinations on the job. She saw her father’s face on her partner and tried to hurt him. As a young child Reni’s father used her to lure women that he would soon kill. Now an agent she doesn’t know needs her help. Her father has agreed to show where the bodies are buried, but only if she accompanies them.
This is a very interesting and entertaining story. There are some great twists, especially towards the end. Although I am giving this five stars and believe this is the start of an excellent series, I do think the Body Reader series is better.
Erin Bennett does a great job narrating.
If you have kindle unlimited this book is $1.99 to purchase.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Bad reviews ?
Some say they lost interest and have listened to better . I have listened to a lot of murder stories too and I would love to know what they have listened to because if it were better than this it would have to be awesome ! This to me is one of those stories that drew me in from the first. I tried to make it last by just an hour a day. That didn't happen. I'd cut it off a couple of hours to eat or talk with friends, but this is one of those stories I couldn't put down ! The narrator goes up there with January Lavoy in my opinion. It has a good ending even though it's a part of a series. I can't wait for book 2 !

slow at first
This took about 5 hours until it picked up. started slow for me. But I loved the last few hours. I kept running into the office at work to yell at my co-worker what was happening. I got a little amped up. overall I'm glad I listened and appreciated that there wasn't any graphic sex and f-words. it was a little disturbing at times but nothing that would give me nightmares.

It sounded like a good premise but the writer dragged the story out. Had one twist . Then a most ridiculous unbelievable scenario starts as an action suspense part of story. It is so incredibly STUPID !! It insults you!! Why do this??

Finished in one day!
Excellent book but I could not stand the persistent imagery because it was repetitive and sounded like a book filler. The narrator had a nice voice but she needs more practice with inflection as it was somewhat monotone. Despite the different characters. THE STORY however; my goodness! I enjoyed it. I saw NOTHING coming and was intrigued. Although the repetitive imagery made me want to stop short with the listening and exchange the book, Anne was able to pull me back in and
give it a chance. Glad I did because I think this is Anne’s best story!
Good job!! I will be keeping this one in my library for a second listen!

Good, but not one of her best works
I love Anne Frasier books, The Body Reader and Elise Sandburg series are excellent. I have read several of her stand alone books as well, also very well done. So it is with sadness that I say this book does not live up to the standard that I have come to love from Anne Frasier.
With that said I do not think this is a bad book. Nor do I think that someone who loves Anne's work should skip over it. There are some twist and turns that you don't see coming. However that heart pounding action and overall mystery of the reader figuring out who the killer is feels a bit lost in this one.
I did not get into this book completely until about halfway though the book and it wasn't until around a 3/4 of the way though did I stop thinking why does this matter. It also took me longer than normal to really start to feel an affinity for the characters.
Overall I just do not feel this is one of her best works, but I do plan to make sure that I grab the next in series.

Okay
It was okay. I enjoyed listening to it but it'll probably be forgettable. The plot twist was predictable, but that doesn't mean it was bad. The beginning seemed very Hannibal Lecter-y. I was interested and invested the whole time while listening to it, but I wouldn't say that I couldn't put it down.

Another great read from Anne Fraiser!
I think I have read nearly every book by Anne Fraiser because she does such an amazing job pulling you to each of her stories. I listened to this book in just a few days bc I couldn't put it down! The characters are all very realistic and well thought out and the story line is not predictable at all, but not so off course as to be unrealistic. Can't wait for the next book!

Not a bad story
I love Anne Frasier, but this story didn't have her usual intriguing characters, thrilling moments or plot twists that leave me trying to figure out at what point I should have caught on. I saw all of the main plot twists coming, making them much less effective at building the suspense.
I'm not overly curious to see where Wreny and Daniel go next as I didn't develop a bond with them, but as I love the author I'll probably still read/listen to the next book.

Fine by Me 🙂
Anne Frasier has an immense talent for portraying adults from dysfunctional childhoods without the melodramatic clichés that authors usually rely on. The family relationships between psychopaths or narcissists and their children is so complex and individual with such subtle emotional differences, I've never read another authors work who've got it so spot on.
Although I like these characters, Id love her to write from a serial killers perspective, a la Dexter! I think the realism she could bring to a character who most would view as a Monster would be revolutionary!

Really enjoyed both the story and performance 😊
Great story and performance. A relaxing listen if not a little predictable in some areas. I enjoyed the story and recommend a purchase.

Fantastic - twists keep.coming
So many twists and turns. Gripping and unputdownable. I devoured this non stop over a week. Highly recommend.
