Publisher's Summary

The fifth volume in Piper's acclaimed The Swans Are Not Silent series illustrates powerful and enduring lessons through the missional sufferings of Tyndale, Judson, and Paton.

Jesus' words in John 12 are sobering: unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it will bear little fruit. The history of Christianity's expansion proves that God's strategy for reaching unreached peoples with the gospel includes the sufferings of his frontline heralds - the missionaries who willingly die a thousand daily deaths to advance God's kingdom.

Pastor John Piper's latest addition to The Swans Are Not Silent series focuses on this flesh-and-blood reality in the lives of William Tyndale, Adoniram Judson, and John Paton. The price they paid to translate the Word of God, to pave the way for missionary mobilization around the world, and to lead the hostile to Christ was great. Yet their stories show in triplicate how the gospel advances not only through the faithful proclamation of the truth but through representing the afflictions of Christ in our sufferings.

Definitely the best Christian series of books I’ve had the pleasure and privilege to listen to.

This is probably the best Christian series of books I have listened to. I really like how I am challenged in my life walk with God and it has really inspired me in my daily disciplines - disciplines that I believe and trust will become firm foundations in my faith, hope and love for our Lord and Savior.

Thank you to both the author and narrator for these books.

The ultimate cost of following Christ.

Thought provoking messages. Narrator very easy to listen to. Only a couple hours long.

get all these thumb-nail biographies

The particular sets of three (3) biographies that deal with suffering, endurance and afflictions ( at least 3 volumes in "the swans deal with these issues) have had a long lasting impact on me.
I don't know much about the author (Mr. Piper) and his personal beliefs/convictions, however, I learn a great deal about the persons and struggles of those he writes about.
5 star all around audio productions. I go to them over and over.

A lackluster authorship ruins an good history

I found the nuanced details of each hero wonderful. Details of Tyndale's capture, of Judson's three wives, of the struggles of Paton are presented, more so than other accounts I've heard told. But Mr. Piper is not willing to take the same stand as these hetos. By using the modern, corrupt text, he is handing victory to the enemy. These men died not wavering, standing on the truth. This author deals the worst insult by saying how admirable is their work and sacrifice for God, yet he does not take and hold the same position, and we know he stands to loose very little for it. I will never listen to another of his works.

The narrator holds his own. It's a good presentation, and I enjoyed it. I've listened to him before, and, God willing, I will again.

Great Biographies - Pity About His Calvinism

Inspiring biographies - let down by Piper promoting the false doctrine of Calvinism. Perhaps he should have also mentioned the death of the martyrs Calvin allowed to be killed - simply for holding a different doctrinal stance!

Brilliant short book - very inspiring

Brilliant stories of three amazing missionaries, with lots of history and context included to make the accounts rich and satisfying. Listened in one sitting. So good. Would recommend, especially to anyone NOT already passionate about mission/missions mobilisation - clear that Piper's heart for this book was to inspire. It should do the trick!!

The narration was quite poor to be honest, really not getting emphasis or punctuation right a lot of the time. I often genuinely wondered if it was being read by a computer. This did not detect significantly however - just had to replay a few parts to understand properly.
