Publisher's summary

This audiobook includes bonus tracks with interviews from Shauna Niequist (Present over Perfect), Hillary McBride (Mothers, Daughters, and Body Image), Pete Enns (How the Bible Actually Works), and more from Jen's podcast, For the Love!

No more hiding or people-pleasing up in here, sisters. No more being sidelined in your own life. It is time for us to be brave, to claim our gifts and quirks and emotions. You are set free and set up and set on fire.

Now you can get busy doing what you were placed on this planet to do. Now you can be honest, honest, honest about all of it, even the hard stuff, even the humiliating stuff, even the secret stuff. Now you can walk in your convictions of faith and ask new questions unafraid. Now you can be so free, because you are not searching for value from any source other than your own beautiful soul made piece by piece by God who adores you and is ready to get on with the business of unleashing you into this world.

In this audiobook, I break it down into five self-reflective categories - who I am, what I need, what I want, what I believe, and how I connect - and by working your way through them, you will learn to own your space, ground, and gifts (they are yours, sister); be strong in your relationships and lay down passive aggression, resentment, drama, and compliance; say guilt-free what you want and what you need; and welcome spiritual curiosity and all the fantastic change that doing so creates.

You with me, beloveds? If we do this work on our own selves now, not only will we discover a life truly worth living, but we will free our daughters to rise up behind us, with spines straight, heads up, and coated in our strength.

Goin' in for a 2nd listen

First, I challenge anyone who says they didn't come out of this book with Jen living in their head or talking like Jen.

Second, this is my virgin voyage on the Hatmaker express and I wasn't really prepared for the vivacity coming through this book. It's a good ride, people, but it takes energy to listen and wisdom to know when to pause.

Third, not every chapter will be made for you. But the chapters that are, will pierce you to the core.

One of the biggest chapters for me was about spirituality. I'm your typical white woman who grew up in the church and left at 19 with more than a little bitterness. I've been learning and searching on how to connect with my spirituality in the forever wake of the damage. This book provided perspective and let me know that I was not alone in the isolation designed for people who question and challenge the legacy practices and patriarchy.

It's important to know that this book is about empowerment, not about where to place blame or anger.

So pour yourself a cuppa and settle in for the ride.

I highly recommend the audible version.

Jen truly made this audible amazing and worth getting. I also have the hard cover and cannot say enough good things. I think I needed this book about three years ago but I'll take it now. I'm ready to live into who I am, acknowledge who I've always been.

Just order it already.

I'm sure this book in print is marvelous. This book has read by the author is phenomenal! Jen gives additional insights that made me roar with laughter and cry actual tears. The sass is real with this one, but so are the deep deep feelings. It's an honor to have been present to listen to Jen tear up in places. Be sure to listen to every acknowledgment because they're amazing too. I'm sure a pandemic is not the best time to release a book, but I sure needed this right now. May we all go forward more fierce, more free, and more full of fire.

I wish I could give more starts. Just this once. Jen Hatmaker instantly calms me when I’m feeling anxious, or frustrated. This book makes me think, and makes me laugh. This book made me cry. This book made me better by telling me that I was better already. Jen, thank you. You are an amazing woman, and this book made such a difference for me. <3

I Needed This

I did not know how much I needed this teaching in my life. I shared it with my Mom and she agreed for herself, too. Thank you, Jen!

Overall good but hard to follow

I love the baseline story, pushing through adversary. starting a completely new life built off lessons from herself and her friends and resources and tools... fantastic stuff. what was hard for me was all the side bar content. It was " literally " too much that it broke up the fire content of the book. Just as she started getting good and feeling the heat she would side bar but those didnt really bring much value. I drive a hour and a half each direction for work and I need that fire to pump me up and fill the cup, but there was so much stop and go with the side bars. It broke up her points and they didnt have as much punch :(

From another strong-willed child

This book spoke to me in so many ways. Powerful, funny, and honest! Jen’s delivery was both warm and direct, joyful and tearful. The audio version is full of extra content and a feeling of closeness with Jen. It’s like you’re having coffee with that fun girlfriend who never hesitates to tell it like it is.

Thoroughly enjoyed as part of my journey to becoming me. Down to earth, humorous, and authentic.
