Publisher's summary

Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father. As she grows older, Mattie becomes more like family to Lisbeth than her own kin and the girl’s visits to the slaves’ quarters - and their lively and loving community - bring them closer together than ever. But can two women in such disparate circumstances form a bond like theirs without consequence? This deeply moving tale of unlikely love traces the journey of these very different women as each searches for freedom and dignity.

Completely Enjoyable

This story is touching and enjoyable, and challenges one's assumptions about relationships, care-taking, roles in society and the pre-Civil War south. This certainly isn't a ground-breaking book, but it is a sweet and thoughtful story.

Great book!

I couldn't put this book down. Especially for the first half of it.

I've read about slavery and the horrible cruelties humans can justify inflicting on each other, but I'd never considered how white children were affected by that kind of society. Nor had I considered the plight of wet nurses and the relationship between them and the children put in their care.

A very eye opening read. Difficult at times, but worth it.

Note: there are some fairly graphic scenes in this book. They're not overly explicit in my opinion, but for those who appreciate prior warning there is some sexual content and a whipping scene.

Any additional comments?

I liked the book and it kept my interest throughout. I love these kind of stories, although sad about how people were treated. Worth a read!

A MUST

just a snapshot into our shameful past. Filled with multidimensional characters. Characters that you will hate, love, be a gasp by, shocked, angered, and deeply moved by. I found this book so interesting and definitely well worth your point. I can tell this story will stay with me for years to come.

A Gem

I never post reviews, however I was compelled to write this one. This book was an absolute joy to read. I felt like I connected with Mattie and Lisbeth. Their relationship was more than special, to me it was rare, loving, caring and connected. Reading these types of books can be hard, however once you connect with the characters, you forrget the unkindness of people in the way blacks were treated. You get lost in the love and intense connectuon of Mattie and Lisbeth. If you loved this book just wait, Mustard Seed is just as good if not better. Not sure about the other readers of this book, but I didnt want this story to end. I was overjoyed when i found Mustard Seed.
