Publisher's summary

Out of the rich culture of India and the brutal drama of the 1947 Partition comes this lush and eloquent debut novel about two women married to the same man.Roop is a young girl whose mother has died and whose father is deep in debt. So she is elated to learn she is to become the second wife of a wealthy Sikh landowner in a union beneficial to both. For Sardaji’s first wife, Satya, has failed to bear him children. Roop believes that she and Satya, still very much in residence, will be friends. But the relationship between the older and younger woman is far more complex. And, as India lurches toward independence, Sardarji struggles to find his place amidst the drastic changes.Meticulously researched and beautifully written, What the Body Remembers is at once poetic, political, feminist, and sensual.

The narrator fails. Read the hard copy!!

Read this book in hard copy about 15 yrs ago. Wanted to re-read, this time as audiobook. Couldn’t get past the first 4 chapters…narrators Indian accent is unbearable and often indecipherable (even for Indians)

Well conceived, narration hard for me hear.

This is a wonderful story! I had to get the print version too, (which I do occasionally just to mix it up. ) Although the narrator has wonderful expression and a soothing voice. I often didn't catch the first letter or syllable of a word and the meaning was lost to me. I went back and read passages for content and realized I was missing a lot. This is more significant in in this particular book, because some of the culturally different concepts/words are new for me, this may not be a problem if you are very familiar with events and topics surrounding partition in India. After about 1/2 of the book was read, I did acclimate and get better at guessing the consonants, but I do think the narrator needs to annunciate the beginnings of words a little more. Overall I would read this book next time, but the essence of the story remained intact.

Excellent Story, Alternative Narrator Requested

This book was wonderful: detailed, thoughtful, intimate. The audio version would be much better if there was an alternative narrator to the unabriged version.
