Publisher's Summary

Sheila O'Flanagan is the best-selling author of The Missing Wife and My Mother's Secret, and her new best seller What Happened That Night, with its enticing story of mothers, daughters and lovers, will enchant listeners who love the novels of Marian Keyes and Lisa Jewell.

Lola has a plan. She's going to escape the village she grew up in and make it in the big city. She's smart enough - but she's also headstrong. When, one evening, she has to make a life-changing choice, she decides quickly, and without the full facts. But there's no way back.

Bey is every bit her mother's daughter. An impulsive decision puts her in the path of great danger. She's left wary of trusting her own judgement ever again. Then, one night, she's standing in front of the man she loves, with her own choice to make.

For both women, everything changes in a moment. But their biggest mistakes might also turn out to be their greatest opportunities....

Great Read

I absolutely loved this book. One of her best. Interesting story moving from Dublin to Spain. Saga written over a number of years. Sheila is a great author most of her books are the same, just fantastic.

Not for me

I hated this book; the characters are two dimensional and predictable, the storyline similar. The hugely successful and attractive protagonist who has to be repeatedly reminded to be confident and who constantly questions her worth and judgments was just to steeped in cliché to be believable. The narration is excellent but the story is dull and pedestrian.

What a great listen :)

I sooo didn't want this story to end, you feel you're there among the characters watching it all unfold & really good narration as well.
Loved it, Sheila O'Flanagan at her very best!

Beautiful

Makes you feel angry, happy, giddy, like crying, smiling, laughing. Lots of character building and emotions wrapped up in one audio book. I was hooked from the beginning.

Long and drawn out!

Good story a bit different! Could have been a lot shorter, good narration which helped me listen to the end!

Kept waiting for it to get better!

This book did not impress me. I was waiting for the characters to develop, for the purpose of the story to become clear, but it never happened!

The plot is jumpy, spanning years and years and has so much reflection of what has already been said and how everybody was feeling, the actual events get lost.

The characters are 1 dimensional, unlikeable and the ending is out of place and unrealistic.

There is a lot of talk of the central women wanting to be ‘successful’, wanting to have a ‘career’ which would be great if it wasn’t so easily said and so quickly disregarded when anything else happens. For a whole story centred around a girl’s skill and the development of her business, her complex identity and years of mistakes only make sense when she gets her man?? What century is this?

Unremarkable. Boring. Wish I hadn’t wasted my time with it.

Interesting in parts

The author tried really hard to present a rich tapestry of characters but the plot was too muddled. It was interesting in parts but it was far from a compelling read. The romance element of this story was minor and probably needed stronger development.

Easy going, with soul

Easy to listen to, but still a book that gets to the hearts of the characters and how families handle circumstances. Ideal book to read/listen to when you want unwind.
