Publisher's summary

Beneath the Pacific Ocean a volcano surges upward, carrying in its fiery heart a mineral more powerful than uranium. When the volcano breaks the ocean's surface, nations will battle to control what is known as Vulcan's Forge - a source of limitless, clean, nuclear power.

The secret of Vulcan's Forge begins to unravel when Mercer, a man of many talents now working for the US Geologic Survey, learns that the daughter of an old friend is in danger. Saving her takes Mercer from the Oval Office to a secret submarine off Hawaii. On the islands, a secessionist movement has turned violent and the US trembles on the brink of a civil war, while behind the scenes, shadowy figures jockey for control of the emerging volcano.

foul language, returned the title

I bought this because I'd heard an old Clive Cussler title on cassette tape, and it was decent. I understand that Jack Du Brul sometimes co-writes with him, so I thought I'd try it. I got two hours in and turned it off and called Audible and returned the title. There is an extreme amount of foul language, including numerous F words and several usages of Christ or Jesus name as a curse word. I encourage any user in a circumstance not to just sacrifice your purchase credit, but to call and return the title and get your credit back. If they're going to publish R and or X rated content, they should rate it so the consumer can make an informed decision.

Wow…that was truly horrid...

When I first started listening to this audiobook I gave it all the chances I give a first-in-a-series-novel. My internal dialogue went sort of like this: 'Well maybe it will get better…I hope he explains that later…(or) that was just so unbelievable…etc.' Since I was working on some 1940's electric heater restorations at my workbench, I decided to play a game I call, "How bad can this book really get." This book is right there as one of the worst I have listened to in my collection of nearly 1,600 audiobooks.

Every situation is this book is contrived and silly. Many plot lines seem to be afterthoughts, as if to explain the inexplicable. At the end of the book (no spoilers) the author throws in a weird twist that is one of those billion to one circumstances that could explain the whole plot if we didn't understand probabilities against what he has penned.

Forget this book! However, the last one in the series was just released and has Scott Brick as narrator. It is not listed as part of the series (but it is). I think the producers are distancing themselves from the early works by bringing in a narrator we all enjoy. Don't be fooled…even if the others are better than this one, the author has too far to go to earn his royalties from our credits.

Pretty good

I downloaded this because Du Brul co-writes with Clive Cussler and I wanted to see what his work is like by itself. It is a good mystery novel, albeit, basic. He goes into a lot of detail justifying and explaining what is going on. It's missing that extra WOW that Cussler adds. That being said, it is worth the download.

Cussler wannabe

I chose this book because Mr. Du Brul has co-written with Clive Cussler on several books. However, the style is exactly like Cussler's--minus the good taste and talent of Cussler's books. There is absolutely no reason for the foul language and sex scenes. They added nothing to the book--and took away from an already mediocre work. The character is a beer chugging tiresome shadow of Dirk Pitt. Don't waste your time or credit with this one.

Could be the work of a precocious 10-year old

After having read the glowing reviews of my fellow listeners, I was sorely disappointed with this production. Given the witless dialogue and inane action in the prose, I understand why the performer read it as fast as he could. There is an interesting plot that kept enough interest to finish listening. The plot does not fully resolve at the end of this book, apparently to be continued in a later work. I will never know.

Never a dull moment!

Mercer is a hero's hero. Well paced, action, science, entertainment! J Charles performance is wonderful. Four stars because the Director could have better-researched Hawaiian pronunciations and the Editor could have spent more time cleaning up mouth noise.

Not a very good listen

Would you try another book from Jack Du Brul and/or J. Charles?

I have read another of his and it was pretty good. That was why I gave this one a listen. I was sorely disappointed in this one.The storyline was okay. But the details were awful. It was obvious that the author's entire knowledge of firearms, martial arts, and combat came entirely from TV and movies. Almost nothing was right.

What could Jack Du Brul have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

If he had done any research at all he would have had a greater understanding of how firearms function and the effects they have on targets. For that, an understanding of how the human body reacts would have also been nice. All in all, little of those scenes was believable.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Barring a complete rewrite of the book, I would NEVER recommend this as a movie.

Any additional comments?

Trite and unbelievable. That was my takeaway. It'll be a while before I try another of the Philip Mercer series...

Ready for more of his books.

Jack De Brul, I can see why Clive Cussler used him as a co- writter!
J. Charles, I have enjoyed him narrating several books now.

Vulcans Forge.

I enjoyed it completely, and now I understand why Clive Cussler would work with such a great story teller. I look forward to Jack's next book with anticipation. Well done!

If this was Mr. DuBrul’sfirst book I really enjoyed it. It kept me on the edge of my seat and always kept me interested. I hope he will continue with the series I can’t wait
