Publisher's Summary

An isolated Welsh island seemed like the perfect escape for a convict on the run, a jilted woman, and a policeman seeking a quiet life. When the surly locals turn to murderous violence the three visitors are forced on the run together, trying to stay one step ahead of their increasingly insane pursuers.

The bad news keeps coming. There are too many to fight. There is no escape from the island. And the worst storm in years has just begun. They can only run and hide as they face a night of horror and madness. If they don't work together then none of them will live to see the light of day.

This tense survival horror novel is a homage to decades of nasty villains, scary predicaments, and bloody books and films.

    "Bloody great story,"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If I had friends that were into audio books, I would definitely recommend it. It was graphic and gory and had a great story. The twist is well explained and very interesting.

What did you like best about this story?

The idea behind the what was happening on the island is one that i am very interested in. it is explained in great detail. Also really enjoyed the amount of carnage the story had for being on the shorter side.

What does Tom Freeman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

While his accent was a little tough to get used to (only cause i do not hear it all the time), once I acclimated to it, he was great. he did the accents and voices very well,

Who was the most memorable character of Turner and why?

Chris, the main character. He was interesting because at the outset of the story, he was not inherently good. He was someone who was on the wrong side of the law and hiding out. It shows the complexities and dichotomy of the human condition.

    Any additional comments?

    "Kinda cliche"
What was most disappointing about Karl Drinkwater’s story?

When the synopsis says "This tense survival horror novel is a homage to decades of nasty villains, scary predicaments, and bloody books and films.", I didn't think that I would be reading a repeat of some of those stuff. The author uses some of the now cliche'd horror sequence in this book. Three incompatible people, running from a murderous crowd, unwillingly helping each other in order to survive, on an island that's getting worst storm in years... the cliches just keep on going. There were no really unique or thrilling passage. No twist.

What three words best describe Tom Freeman’s performance?

    Clear. Distinct. Ok.

    "Don't visit this island"

I got a little lost in the story, confusing some of the characters, but I blame that on me and not the story. Once I got back on track I enjoyed it . Throughout the entire story I really enjoyed the narrator's accent. Even when I was lost I just enjoyed listening to him speak.

    "Action Packed Scary Thriller"

I enjoyed listening to this book. Evil by the name of Lord John on isolated island in Wales and will not be visiting. Most of the visitors never return from this island, I loved the character of Chris Turner as well as Megan, David with his dog Spotty, Tom and 1 islander Ann (Branthee). They must survive and escape the horrors that the villagers (under Lord John’s control) inflict. There is physical/psychological horror and gore. You must listen to the epilogue. Recommend to horror lovers also suggest his short horror Harvest Festival. Good narration.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review, THANK YOU

    "Excellent intelligent horror thriller "

I was surprised how much I enjoyed Turner - so much so that I have written my first book review! At first glance, it looks like a trashy horror novel, but I was hooked by the audio sample, and downloaded. I was glad I did.

The plot is intelligent, intriguing and very well written, with a real sense of foreboding and suspense in the opening few chapters, developing suddenly into frantic, shocking excitement, all underscored by the mystery of the island and what is behind all the horrific happenings. At the same time, the pace of the novel varies pleasingly, so I never suffered from shock-horror fatigue!

It's a testament to Karl Drinkwater's writing and Tom Freeman's accomplished storytelling and characterisation, that found I CARED about the main three characters (not always the case in this genre) . Mr Freeman even manages to inject a bit of humour at times - I particularly liked his performance of the evil and more-than-slightly unhinged Lord John!

Thanks for this - an exciting, unsettling and satisfying listen.

    Story
    "Suitably scary"
    Any additional comments?

This is a very clever story and suitably scary. The concept with the tiny island and its inhabitants, who are frequently cut off from the mainland is a brilliant idea. All the characters are well drawn and believable, even those that are insane come across well. The only downside, for me, was the narrator. Tom Freeman has a lovely, well modulated and genial voice, entirely unsuitable for this genre. I felt like I was listening to a game show host and although after listening to the sample I thought that the juxtaposition of a soothing voice reading a horror story would be a great dichotomy, it ultimately simply didn't work for me. However, Karl Drinkwater has written a great, fast paced and gripping story that's definitely worth a listen.
