Publisher's summary

In To the Far Blue Mountains, Louis L’Amour weaves the unforgettable tale of a man who, after returning to his homeland, discovers that finding his way back to America may be impossible.

Barnabas Sackett was leaving England to make his fortune in the New World. But as he settled his affairs, he learned that a royal warrant had been sworn out against him and that men were searching for him in every port. At issue were some rare gold coins Sackett had sold to finance his first trip to the Americas - coins believed to be part of a great treasure lost by King John years before.

Believing that Sackett possesses the rest of the treasure, Queen Bess will stop at nothing to find him. If he’s caught, not only will his dream of a life in America be lost, but he will be brutally tortured and put to death on the gallows.

Exceptional character voices

Each character voice was done with accent and intonation. Which brought this action packed story to life.

This book has it all.

If you could sum up To the Far Blue Mountains in three words, what would they be?

This book has it all: tales of pirates, the old America, before it became what the hero of the story Barnabas warned would come- present day America, a true romance, as well as frontier life among the indians, this book is-in my opinion, L'Amour 's best. It's epic.

What did you like best about this story?

The legacy of a pioneer, even if fiction.

Which scene was your favorite?

I couldn't say without spoiling

If you could rename To the Far Blue Mountains, what would you call it?

The history of " U.S."

Any additional comments?

Love to see a movie based on this book.

Mesmerized

I feel like I'm there with them. Each time The book ends, I feel as though I have just lost a friend.

Rich in tradition, strong characters

** spoiler alert ** Another great L'Amour book. The Sackett series is one that stands above the rest. Rich in tradition, strong characters, history and plot. I have always loved the writing of L'Amour, and have finally made it a goal to complete the entire Sackett series.
I have read this book long ago, but was happy to read it again. Slow to start, but impressive once it gets going. My only regret is how much time is covered in the last third of the book. He goes from not being married, to having one child, then all of a sudden it is explained he now has 5, and next thing you know, they are all grown and his time has come to an end.
Bittersweet. However, there is always the next to look forward to!

John Curless Is tremendous

I have read every book Louis has written, I've been a fan for over 45 years. It's nice to hear them in a different voice than my own. The first of Sackets have the proper accent, not my own mid-western voice in my head.
