Publisher's Summary

Some people stay all summer long on the idyllic island of Belle Isle, North Carolina. Some people come only for the weekends - and it's something they look forward to all week long. When Riley Griggs is waiting for her husband to arrive at the ferry one Friday afternoon, she is instead served with papers informing her that her island home is being foreclosed. To make matters worse, her husband is nowhere to be found.

She turns to her island friends for help and support, but all of them have their own secrets, and the clock is ticking as the mystery deepens. Cocktail parties and crab boil aside, Riley must find a way to investigate the secrets of Belle Island, the husband she might not really know, and the summer that could change everything.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Weekenders to be better than the print version?

    I

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the story, but the way the girl (12 yrs old or so) talked to her mother and the way the author had the mother respond to this type of talk drove me up a wall. I am so tired of society spoiling our children and allowing them to talk to adults the way they do, and this book had classic examples of the disrespect and non response that I see every day out there in our real world.
I liked the story, and frankly, it was typical of many of the types of people I have around me in my world. For that reason, and based on the world I live in, it was quite believable, all the way around.

    "Not her best work"

This was not one of my favorite books by Mary Kay Andrews. The storyline was just okay. Nothing really all that over-the-top happened, it just seemed a little bit mundane. There was not a lot of heart in this book. It really felt like something was missing, I found it difficult to really care about any of the characters.

"I don't like anyone in this book!"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Nope. I just don't find this book up to Andrews's usual standard.

Would you be willing to try another book from Mary Kay Andrews? Why or why not?

I've listened to and/or read all previous titles.

What about Kathleen McInerney’s performance did you like?

She is a very good performer with a wide vocal range. This means that annoying characters can be given really annoying voices which sometimes drives me mad. Wait....is that a good or a bad thing?

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

I was distressed by the bratty, bitchy, sullen and judgmental behavior of 12-year-old Maggie. What, I asked myself, could have made this kid think she can act this way? But then Riley began to display the same BBSJ attitude toward Nate and I realized the nut fell not so far from the tree after all. Granny believes each of her opinions must be aired - at great length. And, geez! Has no one ever told any of the three - daughter, mother or grandmother - that it's okay to have an unexpressed thought?

Love Mary Kay Andrews. Every one of her stories is well written with developed characters. Felt like I was on the island and didn't want to leave.

    Another author bent on agendas.
Not that great a story and the interjection of biologically incorrects and Andrews personal views of them are unnecessary. Because many have religious views about the sanctity of marriage between man and woman does not make them a HOMOPHOBE. This is more liberal brainwashing. No more Andrews novels for me.

Cliched characters, none of whom were in the slightest likable. The story line was predictable from the outset. Utter drivel!
