Publisher's summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

Critic reviews

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." My absolute favorite!

this is a "must listen" for anyone who loves this book or Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana's movie rendition. Both narrators (Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole) are perfect at conveying their characters (as I imagine their nuances in my mind's eye)... making me laugh and cry... Highly recommended.

My Favorite Bool

After finishing this book for the 2nd time, I have concluded this Is one of, if not the, best book I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. The story is detailed, funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking and endearing. The performances by both narrators are filled with energu and flawless. I cannot recommend this book enough.

I luv the book and the movie.

I didn't want it to end when it did. I watched the movie as soon as it went off.

Interesting

I enjoyed this book very, very much. I enjoyed the twist on fate the author gave me. I think the narrators did a great job. I really enjoyed them. Laurel Lefkow did an especially good job when narrating Clare through the years of her life changing her voice "attitude" to fit that of the age of Clare.

Female reader

The female reader ended most sentences on an up note that drove me a little crazy. The male reader was very good.

My favorite book.

Having read the book years ago, and had people say it was hard to follow, I was worried it might be even harder to listen to. With a book you can do back to review if needed. But this was even easier. Read well, paced well, thoroughly enjoyed it. Best advice if you've never read this, just go with it, don't try and figure out all out right away, it makes sense as it goes, is a very clever concept and makes for thoughtful conversations!

Great Listen... Good Story!

It was a little hard in the beginning to get into but as the character's started to develop, I enjoyed it. The narration was superb and believable. Now I can watch the movie and see how they compare. I think it was worth my time to listen and will most likely listen to it again next year.

dragggged

I like the story and the characters, but I lost interest in the second part. I would have done better with an abridged verison.
