Publisher's Summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

What the Critics Say

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." "A different kind of love story."

It first I wasn't too sure I was going to like the story. As it unfolded I was drawn in. I enjoyed the characters. I liked that you hear both sides from Henry and Clair.

    "The Notebook meets Dr. Who"

A gut wrenching tale of love, loss, longing and time-travel. It was a David Tennant Dr. Who minus the weeping Angels, Daleks, and space stuff, with Rose waiting and wanting...

Suspense, action, lust, longing, and an emotional roller-coaster.

"Well written but not for everyone"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

    Only to those under 50.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting: Harry, the time traveler and all his adventures.Least interesting: 1) The involved details of sexual acts, miscarriages, and pregnancy labor/birth. 2) Music titles and artists that only the current pop/punk followers would recognize.

Have you listened to any of Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not heard these two readers before. Both did an outstanding job, made the characters believable.

Could you see The Time Traveler's Wife being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I remember this book was made into a movie a few years ago. I didn't see it.I think it would be interesting to see how much would have to be left out of the story.

    Any additional comments?

Audrey Niffenegger is a great storyteller/writer. I was impressed with all the details. She reminds me of Stephen King's discerning descriptions.

"Amazing characters who live in these pages"

I'm only half way through this book and it is amazing! These characters are deep, complex, loving, strange and although we learn more and more about them they are real because we will never know it all. They are amazing enough and that's just the characters. The plot line is on a whole other level. Must read/listen!

    "Better than I expected."

I've been listening a lot recently and have been happily surprised by this story. I have found myself eager to listen. The performances were excellent although the plot starts a little slowly. A very enjoyable book.

I expected this to be more of a the "chick-flick" book equivalent, and I love a good light book now and then, but it was more.

    "My favorite book"

The Time Traveler's Wife is not only my favorite audiobook, but my favorite book. I have listened to this book several times and I enjoy it every time. I enjoy time travel stories in general, but this book is much more than that. Apparently the author is working on a sequel as well so I can't wait!

    "Readers sounded sarcastic"

First, performance: I was hoping to zip through this as escapist reading, but the narrators have turned me off of the story. I can sort of understand the decision to cast a female reader who could sound as if she is six years old, however, neither reader rises to the occasion in my opinion. Both of them often sound as if they're doing a sarcastic reading of the text.

Second: the writing itself: I may finish reading this if I happen to come across a copy somewhere. I don't mind the present-tense at all, but the constant use of passive voice gets old fast.

    Story
"Wonderful! Surprisingly well crafted and modern"
Would you listen to The Time Traveler's Wife again? Why?

I will listen to this book again. It is well written and the necessarily complex nature of the plot suggests I have missed or misunderstood enough to stay engaged.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is incredibly original. It is not a time traveling machine, it's a disorder. It is not an adventure any more than our own lives are. Their lives are both tragic and full of joy as a result of this disorder. The philosophy I got from this book was how important it is to live in the moment. This man was desperate to live only in the moment. So often I let myself drift back to emotionally intense moments in my life and those difficult reveres result in no changes at all. Here, Ms. Niffenegger shows us a man who actually lives in those moments again, and even he can change nothing. If he works so hard to live in his real time, then shouldn't I?

What does Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think I would have enjoyed the book if I sat on my couch instead of drove my car. Their performances were great. They presented authentic accents, perfect masculine and feminine inflection in both cases. They bring an element of drama, like all actors should.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have enjoyed it all in one sitting, but, of course, I didn't. I did listen at times I ordinarily do not, like while cooking or walking the dogs. It was very very compelling.

"Beautiful Story! A Romance Sci-Fi That You'll LOVE"
Where does The Time Traveler's Wife rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've read this bk and listened to the audio. Great voices and and wonderful story!

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Henry is my absolute favorite.

Have you listened to any of Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Unfortunately no :(

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I've already seen and own the movie version. It doesn't do the book justice. But I still love them both!

    Any additional comments?

This book in general is just rediculously GOOD! My ALL-TIME-FAVORITE! no joke! I would recommend this book to both men and women.
