Publisher's Summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

What the Critics Say

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." "Loved the Story!"
Where does The Time Traveler's Wife rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is a well-woven story. It is one of my favorite so far from Audible.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Henry, naked in the basement, saying hello to Alisha.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I wouldn't say I had a severe reaction no. But I thought it was a sweet story. Several parts near the end made me cry.

    "Entertaining and Unusual"

Entertaining and unusual. This story was unusual, but still an entertaining and good read. The author did a good job of getting my attention and keeping it throughout the book.

    Story
"Jumping through time with the one you love."
Would you listen to The Time Traveler's Wife again? Why?

Not only will I listen to The Time Traveler's Wife again I will listen to it a fifth time! When the movie came out I wanted to see it as soon as possible. It was good. But, when I bought the audio book I couldn't stop listening to it. It has been at least my fourth time that I have gone through and listened to it at work. Every time I pick up a little more insight to the story.

What did you like best about this story?

The back and forth with the characters taking turns in telling the story. The time jumps are also phenomenal. They bounce around but the story still maintains its path to the end.

Which character – as performed by Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole – was your favorite?

Both of them are fantastic. The blended very well together.I had first listened to another version with different performers and they were exceptional as well (I forgot their names. Sorry).

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The times where Henry talks about and is with his mother. I can't say any more without giving things away.

    Any additional comments?

There are spots of comedy in the story but mainly it is fulfilling love story. A story that could go on forever jumping back and forth in time.

    Story
"Great book in both print and audio!"

I remember when this book was new and on the big front table in the book store. I picked it up and read the summary and thought, "You've got to be kidding me!" It sounded so outlandish that I couldn't imagine it being any good. Then someone gave it to me for Christmas and I felt like I had to read it just so I could say that I had. I was blown away. I'm not usually one to cry over a book, but cry I did.

The ideas in this book are certainly out there, but the story is so well told that you find yourself having no problem accepting that this reality is possible, even reasonable. The characters are so well developed and likable that you could imagine being friends with them.

I've read some of the negative reviews for this book and I found myself thinking, "Wow. I must be really naive to have fallen for a book that so many people find predictable/cheesy romance masquerading as literature/too long/boring." Then I realized, who cares! I love it! And I had a great time reading it and listening to it.

    "The story stuck with me"
What made the experience of listening to The Time Traveler's Wife the most enjoyable?

The story is thought-provoking, and stuck with me for weeks after I had finished listening to it. This version of the story goes much deeper into the implications of Henry's time travelling than the movie. Reflecting on the movie, it feels like it's playing in fast forward compared to the book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Henry is my favourite character because he's imperfect but does the best he can with the broken life he is given. On the other hand, I found Clare's unfailing goodness and her unshakable dedication to him rather frustrating. I found myself wanting her to do something he wouldn't approve of.

What about Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole ’s performance did you like?

I thought at first that having two people narrate the story would be jarring, but it ended up bringing the story to life. They did a great job, though sometimes Berman's female voices sounded a little forced.

If you could take any character from The Time Traveler's Wife out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would definitely love to pick Henry's brain. His experience and knowledge of time travel would be a fascinating conversation.

    "I fell in love"
If you could sum up The Time Traveler's Wife in three words, what would they be?

    Destiny. Sacrifice. Love.

What other book might you compare The Time Traveler's Wife to and why?

I have never experienced another book that could even come close to comparing to The Time Traveler's Wife. The plot is so original and the story is told so well that it makes you believe that there might actually be someone out there who time travels.

    Any additional comments?

This book left me stunned on several occasions and I actually cried two different times at the end. I fell in love with Henry and Claire's love. This book really makes you cherish the moments you have with those you love and it offers a new perspective on what it truly means to love another person.

"I just didn't find much of a story."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I found this repetitive and a little boring. I kept waiting for something big to happen.......but it didn't !

Has The Time Traveler's Wife turned you off from other books in this genre?

I will still listen to books of this genre. I have discovered that it is ok not to enjoy all of them.

What about Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole ’s performance did you like?

Not much due to lack of story

Do you think The Time Traveler's Wife needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No.......please
