Publisher's Summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

What the Critics Say

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." My interests run to psychology, popular science, history, world literature, and occasionally something fun like Jasper Fforde. It seems like the only free time I have for reading these days is when I'm in the car so I am extremely grateful for audio books. I started off reading just the contemporary stuff that I was determined not to clutter up my already stuffed bookcases with. And now audio is probably 90% of my "reading" matter.

    "A truly beautiful love story"

I had this book on my wish list for a long time because I was so intrigued with the reviews, but the movie came out before I had a chance to read it and I foolishly went because after all it had Rachel McAdams. The movie was such a disappointment that I nearly gave up on trying the book but I am so glad I gave it a chance. The book is so wonderful by contrast. Probably some of it has to do with how easy it is in a book to indicate subtle shifts in time that are just confusing on screen. I think more of it has to do with how a book can delve into the inner reactions and feelings of the characters in more detail. Niffenegger has worked out the issues of time travel in a very satisfactory way. Once you've accepted the premise that leads to Henry's particular problem, all the following consequences are very believably dealt with. And while the particulars of Henry's and Clare's story may be typical in a lot of ways, the time travel aspect gives it all a special poignancy. This is a deep meditation on love and loss and hope for those who are willing to give themselves up to it.

    "Forget the Movie!"

This book is an absolutely MUST listen for anyone who loves a good love story with some flights of fantasy thrown in for good measure. The story is captivating, funny, poignant... and probable.

I saw the movie trailers for this story and thought about seeing the movie, but when I saw it available on Audible, I decided to give the book a listen first. Now I don't think I ever want to see the movie. I simply don't believe it could ever be as good as the performance given by Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole. Berman and Strole don't just narrate the story, they bring Henry and Claire to life and it is Henry and Claire telling their own story in their own voices.

I can't imagine a better way to tell this story than through these two voices, so well chosen and well suited to their characters. I can't imagine a better introduction to audible books!

    "Bittersweet and haunting!"

This book will stay with you for a long time as the characters are well developed and the story line is great. It is a "power of love" book that draws you in...and you worry and wonder about Clare and Henry. There is great sadness in the story which is the heartbreaking part and a fascinating love story which is joyful and true. Niffenegger takes you away with this book and the narrators did a splendid job too.

    "Robert and Laura"

Well, well, well, I have been an avid reader of fantasy/sf since 1952 and I believed I had read the best and there was nothing that would capture and hold my attention again as stories and books did in my early years. I was captivated by the wonderful people and their lives. I was in love again while at the same time I was contemplating my own mortality. What a wonderful surprise
    Thank you Miss Audrey

"More than just a gimmick - Very enjoyable"

I adored this book and got caught up in the characters and their complexity. What I most liked about the book is that they took an interesting concept - time traveling - and wove a great story around it. It was a robust and complicated story that would not have worked without the time travel concept and also went well beyond that. I found all of the characters including the supporting ones to be imperfect, intriguing and real. I wanted to know more about each one of them. Finally Niffenegger uses just the right amount of foreshadowing in her book. The readers were delightful. It may be easier to listen to versus read as the narrators give you vocal cues to anchor the story.

    "Simply Wonderful"

I almost passed on this novel and glad I did not. Henry is married to Claire and he visits her at different stages of her life.
Within this novel there is humor, sensitive love and tenderness. Most of all the experience is beautiful within this story. And you begin to wish you could travel within time. It seems so very possible to attain this talent.
I found the narrators to be very very good and hope to find other books they narrate and the characters are from the beginning very well developed.
Come April I'll most likely be revisiting The Time Travelers Wife

    "A superficial romance with a time-travel twist"

Even though this book is already heavily reviewed, the opinions are so divided I had to put in my 2 cents. Any story with time travel is going to have some logical problems, so I was willing to go along and accept all the inevitable cause-and-effect paradoxes. What I found annoying were the other plot devices the author used in an attempt to spice up the story. Many times Henry had no problem telling others about his time traveling affliction, but at other times (when it made the story more interesting) he couldn't. Sometimes Claire and Henry felt free to tell each other what would happen in the future; other times (when it heightens conflict), they didn't. Sometimes he knows when he will return to his own time, but at other times (when it adds dramatic tension) he doesn't. None of this is ever explained. Good scifi writers know that if they expect their readers to accept a different world, they need to set up clear rules within that world and stick to them. This author doesn't do that.

I found the idea of this book interesting and was initially enthusiastic, but the single-minded romantic focus wore thin after a while. (Will they or won't they get together? We already know they will. Do they have any other interests in life? Apparently not.) This could have been an interesting meditation on love and the inevitable loss we all must go through, but the superficiality of the characters undermined those larger themes. I suspect that the long descriptions of Henry's musical tastes and Claire's artwork were an attempt to flesh out the characters a bit, but it didn't work for me. They just came across as hip, vacuous, self-centered yuppies with a time travel problem. Read this if you absolutely love romances, have lots of time, and don't mind sad endings. Otherwise, give it a pass.

    "Loved the book"

Like many other reviewers, I found myself riveted to the story. I kept putting off listening to it until I knew I'd have enough time in the car to settle back into the story line and listen for awhile. I LOVED the whole concept, and the love story between Henry and Clare was woven adeptly around the startling premise of time travel. LOVEDLOVEDLOVED it. Contrary to some reviewers, I didn't think the occasional "bad" language was out of place. That's how people talk in the real world. (though her use of the "C" word from Clare didn't ring true to me.) I also thought the descriptions of the sex/lovemaking scenes were a good combination of graphic and tender and that didn't bother me in the least.

BUT- eventually Laurel Lefkow's narration of Clare's perspective began to grate on my nerves almost beyond endurance. All of her male voices sounded the same, and they all sounded forced and awkward. I got a mental picture of a woman with her chin on her chest, forcing her voice as low as possible- and as a result, none of the male characters had any notable inflection, or changes in tone or expression. I found myself wishing that her part would be soon over- talking back to my mp3 player saying "PUT THE GUY BACK ON!!!" It's for this reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5.

Other than that, I absolutely loved this book. This is actually the first review I've written- done because I enjoyed it that much. I was left wishing there was more- wishing the story could go on, sad that it was ended.

    Time travel done well.

It's such a tricky topic and the trick in this book is not trying to explain it. It happens and we get told a fantastic story of how two people fall in love but at different times. We see the challenges he faces, the challenges she faces and how they learn to deal with their lot.

Performance is good and I think you can read and enjoy this if you have watched the film (and vice versa).

I have made some awful choices lately in respect of my reading. A friend recommended this to me and I finally thought I should read it. I found it quite creepy and certainly very odd, it left lots of unanswered questions.
I didn't stop listening - even though I did drift away from some of the more tedious parts, and I think this was because the characters were acceptable and I was sufficiently intersted to find out about them.

    "Very Disappointing"

It was a bit of an ordeal, it is far too long, probably about 10 hours too long! I found the female voice very difficult to listen to which didn't help. There wasn't much of a story and it was very chaotic due to the different voices and jumping around in time. I kept hoping it would get better but it didn't. When I eventually got to the miserable and depressing end of the book I couldn't care less about the characters, I just wanted it to be over.

I will NEVER revisit this book, it is the worst and most disappointing book I've ever bought from audible.

    "All the emotions are touched"
If you could sum up The Time Traveler's Wife in three words, what would they be?

    Beautiful, flowing, heart-wrenching.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There's really 2 main characters in this and I won't be giving anything away by saying they are the time traveller and his wife. 😀

Which scene did you most enjoy?

All the scenes are special because the fact they exist at all is only due to chance ... each scene could be interrupted at any moment, and the moment is broken. That's the beauty and pain of this story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but if I say I give away 2 plot points !!

    Any additional comments?

It's a beautiful story. I read the book about 12 years ago and decided in a re-read via Audible as it touched me so much. I think the Audible version is really well done with 2 voices and that makes the story easier to follow. This is in my top 5 of books ... I very rarely re-read books..

I found the voice actors to beautifully express the characters better than the actors of the film. I highly recommend to listen to it rather than watch it to grasp the full effect of it. It was adorable how they adapted to Alba's voice and overall just superb.
