Publisher's summary

Former Marine and bona fide hero, Ranger Corrigan, is one paycheck away from joining his brethren among the ranks of Los Angeles's homeless veterans. When he is offered a great paying job in a palatial mansion, Ranger jumps at the chance for a roof over his head and a hot meal in his belly.

Handsome and cultured Landry Metzel lives too well to be the insurance appraiser he claims to be, and Ranger can't help but want to know why he's been hired to protect an innocuous man with no enemies. Metzel certainly won't be sorry to see him go.

As famous masterpieces suddenly begin disappearing from private collections, Ranger begins putting two and two together. When an LAPD detective starts asking questions about murders tied to the thefts, Ranger suddenly wants to learn more about the man he's hopelessly attracted to.

A wisecracking former Marine, a man with a desperate secret to hide, and a murderous villain come together in a tale of murder, danger, intrigue, and the crime of the century.

Loved!

The Thief is a terrific romance with an action filled storyline. I gobble this audiobook up!! I loved how complex and fully developed these characters are.
Ranger and Landry are wonderful together and Michael Pauley does an amazing job of bringing this story to life. I could listen to him read the phone book!

One of the best

I was really engrossed in this story. What a smart way to add a real problem into a story. It was exciting. I was rooting for the characters. Very good story. The narrator was great. I always enjoy his work. I am now looking at other stories by this author.

Wonderful and intriguing

This audio had an excellent storyline. The art thefts made an impact when you take into consideration of why. This added so much to the story and actually to the romance. Definitely one to listen to again!!

Lost in Tears

First- the story is fun, interesting, and I got lost in its unique qualities. Then I realized along the way that US is not too far off from this reality. I cried during the last chapter and epilogue because I know our country is so close to being the new Nazi Regime. It’s unbelievable how easy it would be for such hatred to take over a country. For hate to destroy the fabric of Democracy. Yet here we are. 2021 and tinkering on the brink. Will we be the next atrocity? Will will allow the right and their radicalized white men to carry out such horrors? God I hope not. I cry because I now, for the first time in 50+ years, see that it’s possible.

Thank you Patricia. Thank you for always moving me. For always giving me something to think about.

Beautifully Sad

What a beautiful story. This story should be shared because the meaning behind it should be told and shared to everyone. The horrors of the Nazi’s need to be shared so we as humanity don’t repeat that horrible time. In todays climate we are so close to repeating that behavior and a wonderful story such as this could enlighten so many. Thank you for sharing this with me. I hope you continue with your wonderful talent of story telling.

Hard to believe Patricia Logan wrote this,

she's usually better. This book is formulaic, with a flimsy storyline. Sigh, don't waste your time or money on it. The narrator did the best he could with what he had to work with.

Powerful

This was a surprisingly powerful book. Ranger is hired as a bodyguard for Landry, and is immediately suspicious of what Landry does. Seeing Ranger's backstory before getting hired is heart wrenching and seeing what/why Landry does what he does is so powerful. It really makes you think. Its great seeing Cassidy Ryan as well. I really wasn't sure how we would get to an HEA, but we did. Highly recommend. Narration was great, and the haunting music between each chapter really added to it.

The Thief

The Thief is Book 2 in Patricia Logan's The Marine Bodyguards series. Though one of the MC's, Ranger, is mentioned briefly in the first book, and Taz and Storm are briefly in this book, this book is able to be read/listened to as a standalone. Ranger is close to being homeless and takes a job as a bodyguard to a very wealthy insurance appraiser. Ranger is suspicious of Landry's wealth and his need for a bodyguard. But, Ranger is desperate for a job, food and a roof over his head. He pays attention to all going on and works to determine what secrets his new boss is hiding. His suspicions are really aroused when police detectives show up to question his boss about a stolen painting he had appraised. Even though Landry is able to answer the detective's questions, and his answers sound plausible, Ranger is suspicious.

Landry has a lot to hide and isn't happy when his assistant insists that he have a bodyguard. Landry is close to completing his grandfather and father's work, but it's getting more dangerous. Someone is after him, and doesn't hesitate to kill those who get in his way. He's not prepared for his attraction to Ranger and though he doesn't want to, he has to trust him to help him. But, it all comes to a head and everyone's safety is at risk.

This was a very interesting story with a lot of sad history involved. And I didn't like Landry until I had more information about why he does what he does. Until that point, I was ready to turn Landry over to the police myself! While I'm no history buff, it certainly makes the reader pause and think about those moments in history, and what was done to people because of hate. And, maybe in 2017, it's a very important reminder of a very ugly part of history.

The narrator of this story is Michael Pauley. I've listened to this narrator's work before and am a fan! He always does a fantastic job of a bringing a story and characters to life. He's able to give individual voices and bring the appropriate emotions out in a story. He had a great voice and keeps a good pace. But, something I was not a fan of in this audio was the pauses at the end and beginning of each chapter and the music that would play. The first couple of chapters I thought something was wrong with the audio, or my phone, and kept checking to make sure it was ok. I really felt that this drew me away from the story and didn't enhance it in any way.

The relationship between Ranger and Landry was much easier than the relationship in the first book, and once all information was shared, the characters were both very likeable. There was a great supporting cast and some funny moments in such a serious book. There was a lot more mystery, intrigue and danger in this book that was really well done. I was taken by surprise by who ended up being the bad guy in this book! I definitely recommend listening, or reading, both books in the series!
