Publisher's summary

Thomas Pendleton loves his wife, Ann, and six-year-old son, Seth, more than anything, but his job often makes him an absent husband and father. One day, after Thomas leaves on a business trip, his wife and son are killed in a car accident. Thomas shuts himself off from the world and is at home grieving when a cosmic storm enters Earth's atmosphere. Scientists are baffled by its composition and origins, but not nearly as much as they are by the storm's side effect: Anyone who has died and chosen not to cross over is suddenly visible and can interact with the living.

Ann does not return, but Seth does, and Thomas sees it as a miraculous second chance to spend time with his son and keep the promises he had previously broken. They set out on a trip to the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., but little do they know that they are traveling headlong into a social and political maelstrom that will test Thomas in ways he could never imagine. Along the way, they come face to face with armed kidnappers who want Seth for his supernatural abilities, meet up with a medium, the ghost of a slave boy, and encounter none other than Abraham Lincoln.

Citing an overpopulation problem caused by the Impalpables, the government begins to take drastic measures. Military scientists have a device called the Tesla Gate that is said to return Impals to where they were before the storm. Many have nicknamed the controversial machine "the shredder" because no one really knows if it will do what it is reputed to, or if it will instead shred the Impals - effectively destroying the soul. Thomas is determined to do everything possible to save Seth, or at the very least, ensure that Seth doesn't have to endure his sentence alone....

The Tesla Gate

A paranormal thriller combines science fiction, horror and a fantastical premise with a heart-wrenching relationship story about a father and his son. Add some great moments of humor, and a ton of insight into what death means and how we "deal" with it, those of us living, anyway, and you have all the mixings of a great new series.

Creepy and interesting, but waiting for other shoe

First off, let me say that Jake Urry is SO good in this production. He owns this story, and it is a shame that the sequels do not feature his amazing, rumbling tones.

The story requires quite a large amount of "suspension of disbelief" to be sure. It has complexities, compelling characters, and strong story arcs. All that said, I have this nagging feeling, somewhere, somehow, that there is a religious/evangelical aspect looming in the background ( which is fine, it's just mildly off-putting to know it is there, without actually being expressed.)

Maybe it is just me, and normal cynicism, but there you have it. A strong offering notwithstanding.

Nicely tear-jerking

This book is based on the premise of a gate opening up and the travelers worrying about losing people just as you really get to appreciate them. This is a refreshing sci-fi book with a narrator who appropriately matches his voice to the situation. I look forward to more books by the author and narrator as I love listening to audiobooks when there is a good story and good reader.

Easy read (listen)

The accent king!!! Let me begin by saying this narrator can do any accent known to man. I enjoyed his tone and I felt like I knew the characters better because of him. The book was great. I like the way he brought history and supernatural together. If you like good books give this a listen. A Truly Fantastic Book!

I was given a free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is a book that it's destinate to become a classic. It is truly remarkable, well-written and masterfully performed. The story will keep you at the edge until the very end and the interspersed historic characters will add the extra twist to the narrative to make it even more enjoyable. In this story vaguely reminiscent of "The Road" (one of my all time favorite), you will find drama you don't expect and fatherly love that continues behind the grave. I'll need to listen to it again, it was so good. Thanks John Mimms for giving us such a valuable piece of literature.

The tesla gate

Really interesting premise! Very emotional story of a man and his son. The narration was really great and I loved the effects they did to portray the voices of the deceased.

Ghosts ARE real

What would happen if all the ghosts became visible? That’s the amazing idea for this book. It is told from the first-person perspective of a father and husband; someone who would die for their family. The father, Thomas, also has some misaligned priorities: he puts work before family, but he does it so he can provide nice things for his family. A lot of men are this way - missing a soccer game or recital because of work. It’s the working-father's curse, and it weighs heavily on Thomas’ conscience.

Then, the nightmare of every father and husband happens. And this book takes off like a dragster.

It’s a well-written book, with emotion flowing from the pages at every turn. It kept me interested and enthralled with every scene. I loved this. I could relate to Thomas. I could see myself doing exactly what he does, make the same choices he makes.

Jake Urry presents an interesting audio journey as the narrator. When the book first starts Jake speaks in his natural voice, which has a heavy English accent. And the way he talks is low, slow and, spooky. It made me think I was listening to a Halloween story narrated by Bela Lugosi.

But that changed quickly. Once the first chapter started, a deep southern accent emanated from Mr. Urry, and it sounded pretty authentic to my non-discriminating ears. How can a narrator go from a proper English-gentleman’s accent to some Mississippi drawl in one second? Talent. Training. This guy is good. And there were no major slip-ups of the accent throughout the book. Sure, the way blokes across the pond pronounce certain words shows up here and there, but it’s not jarring at all and didn't take me out of the story. Also, the tone Mr. Urry presents during narration was full of dread and anxiety, perfectly matching the tone of the book. Great performance!

This audiobook was gifted to me by the narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

Interesting Sci-Fi/Paranormal Story

The story starts out as normal then a cosmic storm hits. A grieving Thomas Pendleton sees his son Seth (ghost/impal) who was killed in car crash along with his mother. They are then on an amazing journey meeting many more impals while they government is tracking them. They meet Abe Lincoln; see Elvis Presley as well as other ghost/impals (including a dog named Jackson) and other living. It really shows the love of a father who regrets not spending time with his family while they were alive and it making it up never to lose Seth again. Great supernatural concept well written

When the audiobook started playing, I was immediately excited. Jake Urry, the narrator, is one of my favorites in the “last days” genre. I was not disappointed.

The fear and discrimination brought on by a supernatural event is exactly what I would expect at this time in history. I emphasized with the main character and would hope I could stand strong in a similar situation. The different characters interwoven throughout the story were great! A very unique concept.

For listeners who enjoy the ending neatly tied up in one book, this book will disappoint. It ended on a cliff note and I definitely will listen to the next installment.
