Publisher's summary

Two brothers: one a gunfighter trying to escape his past, the other a pioneering cattle rancher. Neither knows the other is alive, both struggle to make their own way against overwhelming odds. Through death, birth, gunfights, hangings, scratching the dirt for wealth with no guarantees, hostile Indians and corrupt bandits, the chances of success are sometimes as elusive as smoke on the wind. Nevertheless, the foundation of our country was forged out of such men and women who fought all this and more to make their place in the sun and in American history.

Great Series

Dusty Rhodes is a wonderful author, whom I've just recently discovered. The Longhorn Series is very well written and Gene Engene gave a great performance.

Like Louis L'Amour, Dusty Rhodes has the ability to draw you into the story, to depict the characters and their surroundings without going into great detail.

The one thing I would change if I could, is the abrupt changing from one character to the other without warning. If you are not listening intently it takes awhile to realize the scene and characters have changed.

If you like westerns, you will not be disappointed, they're great entertainment.

The Prodigal Brother

Gene Engene did a good job narrating this story. I started with book one in the series and have listened in order. The story is interesting but at times I was impatient and wanted to hurry the story as the suspense was getting to me. Was interesting that one brother was a rancher the other a miner. Both were occupation that build this country. The first train ride out of Denver was interesting. Can not wait to start book four.

Head 'em up, mooooooove 'em out!

STORY (Western fiction) - This is Book 3 in the Longhorn series, and I must admit I have absolutely loved all three. If it's not my favorite series, it's definitely in the top two or three. Two brothers, each one thinks the other is dead. One is a successful cattle rancher in Texas, the other is an ex-gunslinger in Colorado. You will fall in love with both brothers and root for them as they navigate through the hardships of post Civil War America. It's all there -- cattle rustlers, Indians, banditos and on and on. There's never a dull moment, but there are touching moments as well. The ending of this book was so moving it made me cry, and there's still one more to go!

PERFORMANCE - Mr. Engene is the perfect narrator for this series. He has many different "western" voices he can portray, and they all will contribute to your enjoyment of the story. Some of them are a bit over the top, but it's great listening.

OVERALL - I'd recommend this series for absolutely anyone except young children. No sex or profanity. If you'd let your child watch a western on TV with Indian raids and shootouts, you can let them hear this story. Men and women alike will love this series equally. It's an easy listen and pure enjoyment! Definitely listen to them in order.
