Publisher's summary

2002, Australia: When Melissa discovers a postcard addressed to "Desmond" among her recently deceased father's effects, she is determined to discover this person's identity and his relationship to her father. She soon embarks on a journey that will take her across oceans and into the past....

1930's, London: Caroline grew on a secluded Scottish estate with her "Aunt" Phoebe. Now, the shocking realisation that Phoebe is actually her mother fuels a rebellious streak in Caroline, who elopes to Cairo to get married. But her marriage quickly turns sour and leads to an affair with an old lover, and to a baby boy, Desmond. With her personal life in tatters and WWII approaching, she volunteers as a secret agent, smuggling valuable information into Europe for the British government.

When Caroline finally returns from the war, Desmond is gone; he was secretly taken to Australia by his nanny years before. Will Caroline be able to track him down? And how will her journey to find her son lead to Melissa's mission to uncover her father's past?

So predictable

This is a first for me from this author. It was an epic adventure filled with many characters and locations. I just thought I never could get into the story. First chapter had to be read again at end of book. I forgot about it. It should have been felt with more. I just felt book went all over the place and nothing ever really got developed. Don't know if I will pick up another of her books.

Loved it!

Beautiful story and narrator told in a beautiful voice. The story is relived of three generations of female voices, affected by family secrets, war, love and loss.

Enjoyable and insightful

The story met my expectations and I am taking something away from it. Narration was good

Very glad Caroline got to meet her granddaughter as a second chance with her relationship with her son
The decisions we made in life - may they always make us and not break us

So depressing

So depressing. One occurrence after another of missteps. Didn't feel good at the end. It was okay but not something I would recommend.

Meh

This book is laden with clichés, both in narrative and plot. However, the narrator is excellent so, all told, it's worth a listen whilst going about other activities - since it doesn't require full attention and one can be distracted for several minutes and still catch on to the story.
