Publisher's Summary

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of 12th-century England, this is Ken Follett's historical masterpiece.

    "Absolutely Fabulous!"

The Pillars of the Earth is one of my family's favorite books! It is a sweeping historical fictional account that provides one some insight into the difficulties of life in old England. The extremely well-narrated book flies by.

    "Absolutely Amazing"

40 hours long, and it didn't seem to drag at all. The plot is so complex, yet well explained and never seemed forced. Everything seems to weave together beautifully. Loved this one.

    "Too Long, but otherwise good."

I had to make myself listen to the end of this book, because I was just over it by the last few hours. I love a good story, but I don't like too much description and detail beyond what it takes for me to get a sense of the times and relationships.

    "Breathtaking and Beautiful!"

Pillars of The Earth, was an amazing rich journey in history! I hoped, cried, and laughed my way through this story.
The characters and setting are so real, you could almost touch them.
John Lee is a wonderful narrator and truly brings the story to life.
Though its quite long its never slow. The constant struggle and addaptation of the characters kept me enthralled till the end. I finished feeling that I wanted more. Definitely a must listen!

    "Listened TWICE!"
    Any additional comments?

This book is the absolutely #1 on my list of books! I couldn't find anything else to match it, so I re-listened it and enjoyed it even more the second time! Then discovered there was a sequel, World Without End. Nothing else compares to the rich story and characters, and how they all come together mid-book for an amazing delicious dramatic conflict!

    "Enthralling"

Randomly selected this book a couple of months ago on the website. Downloaded 3 and thought this book had the most potential for being awful so I saved it for last. I couldn't be more wrong. Truly I unknowingly saved the best for last.

I couldn't wait to get in my car and listen to more each day during my awful commute. Even gave up my radio show that I have been dedicated to for over 10 years to listen to this book. Loved the characters, the stories, the history, and the plot. Even the narrator was excellent. Totally worth the 45+ hours. I don't think there was ever a dull moment. I have never ready anything similar, but I am going to purchase the second book in the series.

I've been meaning to get about to this one for a while...now that I have I wish I had sooner. This is my new favorite book and John Lee did a great job on the audio.

    "Ken Follett's Best Book"
What did you like best about this story?

I loved each of the story lines of this book, and how justice was served at the end. As with his other books (Fall of Giants and Winter of the World), he does a great job of describing each story line, and then beautifully brings them all together. I'm not really one for medieval stories, but this is really a story of love, perseverance, and the good and bad sides of the church.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There's too many, but if I had to pick the most significant (not necessarily my favorite because it was gruesome), it would be the demise of William Hamley. Second would be the love story between Jack and Aliana. I loved how she traveled through Europe to find him...very romantic!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it took me several weeks to listen to this book. I listened mostly during my commute, and I'll say, there were times when I felt like I could've kept driving!

    "Great Book"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While it is extremely violent in certain parts, I enjoyed the history, the extensive character development, and watching the plot develop and characters grow throughout the entire novel. I highly recommend this book.
