Publisher's Summary

This remarkably fresh and charming best seller took the world by storm upon its publication. It has since earned two Booker Judges' Special Recommendations and was voted one of the "International Books of the Year and the Millennium" by the Times Literary Supplement.

Mma "Precious" Ramotswe sets up a detective agency in Botswana on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, making her the only female detective in the country. At first, cases are hard to come by. But eventually, troubled people come to Precious with a variety of concerns. Potentially philandering husbands, seemingly schizophrenic doctors, and a missing boy who may have been killed by witch doctors all compel Precious to roam about in her tiny van, searching for clues.

Chosen as a Top Ten Mystery by the Organization of Independent Booksellers, U.S.A., The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is that rare novel that imparts a sage wisdom while inspiring hearty laughter and lasting smiles.

"Meh - not very interesting or enjoyable"

I tried reading this years ago and couldn't get into it, but the audiobook was on sale and I thought it might be better if it was read to me. Nope. I still don't know what all the fuss was about. Not very well written about not very interesting characters.

    "Absolutely a page turner!"
Where does The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This audiobook ranks at the topmost tier. The story is great, the performance is great and the book transports me to Africa. I have never been to Africa but I have some friends from there and I can identify the values and thinking that a person from Botswana would treasure. The book tells so many heartwarming, simple mysteries - and then the mystery about the witch doctor and the abduction of the little boy is absolutely terrifying but has a sweet happy ending. Many such detective stories interwoven in daily life in Botswana.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency?

When the school teacher meets his boy after Mma Ramotswe brings him back. Most memorable moment. Also, when at the end of the book she agrees to marry Mr J.L.B. Matekoni. Absolutely unforgettable!

Have you listened to any of Lisette Lecat’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first listen to Lisette Lecat - I plan on listening to more. It was a great performance.

If you could rename The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, what would you call it?

    Precious Lady Detective

    Any additional comments?

Motswana Mma Precious Ramotswe. who begins the first detective agency in Botswana, in the capital city Gaborone, after her beloved father dies. She is unsure at first but

"Lots of mouth noises from narrator"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really, no. Story wasn't exactly riveting, narrator grossed me out with her mouth noises.

Would you recommend The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency to your friends? Why or why not?

    Story was so-so.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator made disgusting moist mouth noises throughout.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

    "Best reader I've heard. "

Wonderful sweet story and super superb reader. Light, charming, pure depiction of life. Joyous-simply stated but filled with the warmth of being human. No hyperbole or melodrama here!
