Publisher's summary

At a literary festival in Toronto, Linda Fallon encounters the man who was once at the center of her life: Thomas Janes, the famous poet. Since last seeing him, she has married, given birth, and been widowed. Thomas' appearance rocks Linda, raises questions she had long abandoned, and inspires new dreams.

The Last Time They Met moves backwards to explore Linda's life years earlier, at age 26, when an affair with Thomas shattered her life, and at age 17, when they first met.

In this mesmerizing novel, Anita Shreve, author of the international best seller The Pilot's Wife, examines the resilience of emotion and the extraordinary repercussions a single choice, even a single word, can have over a lifetime.

Critic reviews

"Her fluid narrative perfectly mirrors her protagonists' evolving temperaments and viewpoints, while her overall restraint serves to intensify the novel's devastating conclusion." ( Publishers Weekly)

I wanted more!

The story was captivating and I loved how they had a history. I hated the end. Blaire Brown is a fantastic narrator and I love how she changed her voice depending on who was talking.

Very Interesting

I loved this book but it was a little hard to follow at first. The book starts in the future and works it way back in time revealing key pieces of information as it progresses. After you have listened to it the first time, you will want to go back listen again to connect all the subtle clues. I highly recommend it.

love story to remember

Cleverly crafted story about true love and many "what ifs". A love story that you will remember despite - or because of! - its stunning end.
The abridging was well done, no obvious gaps and the narration was excellent.

My favorite book of Anita's

This is my favorite book of Anita's, a wonderful writer! She is particularly descriptive in this book, which I enjoy. It's a great read, with an ending you won't forget.

THE most boring book I've ever tried to listen to...don't bother with it.

Author Scammed the Readers/Listeners

I am a fan of Anita Shreve, especially Pilot's Wife and Fortune's Rock. So it was with anticipation that I invested a good deal of time and emotional energy getting caught up in the lives of the characters in this book. However, I felt "sucker-punched" by the unexpected ending of this book. I am actually so angry at the author for using such a cheap, trite literary trick at the end--one which I feel showed little regard for her audience-- that I am boycotting any future novels by Shreve. If you don't want to feel insulted and cheated out of a credit or $, skip this book.
