Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: We've learned the hard way that authors don't always make great narrators, but Khaled Hosseini is remarkably gifted in both roles. I have listened to the The Kite Runner again and again to be transported to Hosseini's Afghanistan and can appreciate it all the more because of his authentic pronunciations. —Diana Dapito

Publisher's Summary

Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant, is a Hazara - a shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.

The Kite Runner is a novel about friendship and betrayal, and about the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons, and the power of fathers over sons - their love, their sacrifices, and their lies. Written against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before, The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But through the devastation, Khaled Hosseini offers hope for redemption.

    "A must-read joy!"

I'm sure you have been told to read / listen The Kite Runner. This review will be nothing new but I felt compelled to put into words my appreciation for Mr. Hosseini's story-telling ability. It reads like an autobiography and more than once I googled him for a bio. The depth of feeling; the beautiful details and descriptive relationships make this story stand out in my top 10. Listen to this before seeing the movie. WOW.

    "Superb!!"

Having lived in Afghanistan I really enjoyed this book. The authors voice and accent really lend more credence to the story. His words take the reader through the territory and the reader can almost almost smell the smells and taste the flavors. I am looking forward to the author's next book.

    "One of a kind"

This audio is not only one of the best books I ever heard, but also best I ever read! Beautifully written, funny, touching. Its greatness is in the ease of memories of the past, feelings and thoughts of the present... all flying into the protagonist's mind... There is always a light suspense, hint of what may/or not come. Great narration speed and tone add much color to this unforgettable story about a country many of us int the West do not know about.
I highly recommend it to all who are far away from home but who keep the homeland close to their heart - you will relate that much more.

    "Engaging and educational"

I'll admit, I'm your typical American guy and had no idea about the culture and turmoil details in Afghanistan. This book not only weaves a wonderful tale of hardships, but educates the reader about Afghans and their country. The author's self loathing is a bit much at times, but overall a very good listen. I enjoyed this book far more than the "A Thousand Splendid Suns"; which, honestly, I didn't like at all.

    "Engrossing"

What a great story teller! I found it informative, entertaining, emotional, heartbreaking, and thought provoking. I cannot say which I preferred--The Kite Runner or A Thousand Spendid Suns--both engrossing tales.

    "Afghanistan up close and personal"

Broad historical strokes and modern conflict give this compelling story both depth and breadth. The Afghan culture is given to us through the experience of boys and their fathers, and in the context of conquest, strife, and human weakness. There is tenderness and frailty here as well as undeserved loyalty and grace. As the author says, there's no happy ending here, but perhaps a hope. Something that seems more and more rare in this starkly beautiful and fiercely proud country.
