Publisher's summary

A war-weary Navy pilot confronts the deadly skies of the South Pacific, training Marine pilots and battling Soviets MiGs in the wake of the Vietnam War. Fighter pilot Jake Grafton is adrift following combat in Vietnam. With no place in the States to call home, Grafton sticks to what he knows best: taking on the world’s most treacherous skies from the cockpit of a Grumman A-6 Intruder. Now, stationed in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Columbia, Grafton must teach the Marines aboard the art of flying from an aircraft carrier - a mission that, thanks to the unruly Marine Captain Le Beau, is as joyless as it is dangerous.

But when an unexpected enemy appears from above, Grafton and Le Beau must put aside their differences and work together to save the lives of all onboard.

Stephen Coonts second novel!

First released almost 35 years ago, The Intruders is the second of Coonts' many novels and it is also the second in the Jake Grafton series. This novel is set just after the Vietnam war. Grafton flew for the US Navy during the war as did author Stephen Coonts. Grafton is a lieutenant in the Navy and 26 years old. He flies the A6 Navy carrier attack jet just as Coonts flew. Coonts was still in the Navy Reserve when he wrote this novel. The novel tends to be somewhat technical concerning airplanes and carrier take offs and landings, but it is also both an adventure story and a love story.

Those familiar with the 18 novel Jake Grafton/Tommy Carmellini series will know that Grafton later enters the CIA and lfinally becomes CIA director.

I've been a huge fan of author Stephen Coonts for many years. Going back and listening to the early novels more than 25 years after first reading them is a real pleasure.

Exciting

Exciting tactical treatment of post Vietnam aircraft carrier operations. Our hero, Lt Jake Grafton, goes on a cruise, worries about his girlfriend, fights pirates and the Soviets while cementing his relationship with a Marine snake-eating bombardier-navigator. Full of Navy jargon, each word well explained. The book is an exciting listen from beginning to end.

Drop Off From Coonts' First Book

Not quite as exciting as the Flight of the Intruder. Despite the Audible description that "Jake battles Soviet MiGs in the wake of the Vietnam War", there is not one Mig in the whole book. Whoever wrote the description must never have read the book. Instead, hard luck Jake has everything he touches go to crap as Coontz tries to build some excitement with the war over. Coontz does introduce a cool, new B/N for Jake and that relationship is pretty entertaining. I had planned on reading the whole Jake Grafton series after the first book but now I'm not as enthusiastic.

Excellent story. Excellent reader.

I have listened to this story multiple times. I love the reader’s style, acting each personality and character. I really like the play by playin the cot pit, prepping and flying, makes me feel like I’m right there with Jake Grafton each time he goes off the cat.

From Navy Vet

I am not an Airdale, but this book took me home. Loved it. I have not missed the Navy in a long time and this made me want to be a young man, hitting ports and steaming holes in the ocean.

A decent follow on to Flight of the Intruder

Decent story with some good new characters along with some previous ones. Being a Marine, I especially like Jake's new assignment. :-)
