Publisher's summary

Just keep laughing and nobody will get hurt! Author Douglas Adams kidnapped an audience and held them hostage for 90 minutes at London's Almeida Theatre. The audience members were subjected to extremely hot August temperatures and Adams's dramatic solo performances of excerpts and scenes from his wildly funny, wildly popular books The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and Life, the Universe and Everything. LEARN how to fly! HEAR about Arthur and the Irrational Sofa! GROAN at Marvin's escapade with the Frogstar Battle Robot! Adams may have a cult following, but it's the happiest cult around, thanks to his inventive, absurd, and impish humor which comes through fully in this release.
Listen to the rest of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "trilogy."

A Live Performance

Almost twenty years ago, shortly after The Meaning of Liff was published, a friend of mine called me up and invited me to see Douglas Adams that evening at MIT. When Douglas came on stage he started the evening off with a few stories. He next explained how The Meaning of Liff came to be written and then proceeded to read several definitions. Finally, he went on to read selected excerpts from the Hitchhiker?s Trilogy and afterwards he willingly signed my three paperback books.

I mention the above because I thoroughly enjoyed, and have never forgotten, that wonderful evening. Hearing all the writings/speeches/interviews from The Salmon of Doubt being read was wonderful and it vividly brought that evening back to life for me. So much so that I wanted to listen to Douglas performing live again, so I purchased this audio book.

Unfortunately, this live performance did not captivate me. It is missing the spontaneity and sense of fun that I felt twenty years. This is partly due to my enjoying Douglas?s stories and readings from The Meaning of Liff, missing here, very much. However, I also remember his readings of the Hitchhiker?s excerpts as being funnier and warmer than this performance.

I give this audio book a qualified recommendation. If you have never heard Douglas Adams in person than I think you will enjoy his performance here. However, if you have heard him perform in person then you may feel like me after hearing this.

Not the full story

I was under the impression this was the full book. It is not, however, it is still entertaining.

CRAP,CRAP,CRAP

SORRY,SORRY,SORRY. I LISTENED TO ALL 5 BOOKS AND BAD, WENT TO WORSE WENT TO PROVERBIAL HELL. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO DISAPPOINTED IN LIFE. SOMETHING THAT COULD HAVE BEEN WAS NEVER THERE. MY DESIRE FOR HIS SUCCESS WAS, WELL, UNATTAINED. I AM SO SICK AND ANGRY OVER THE TIME THAT I WASTED...HERE IS THE END OF THE TRILOGY....THEY ALL DIE IN THE DEMONLITION OF EARTH BY THE VOGONES. THE FOURTH BOOKS WAS ALMOST "J.K. ROWLING" BUT THEN HE MESSED IT ALL UP ...DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

TOO MONTY PYTHONISH!

The plot, if there is one, shifts so quickly and improbably, that it is not only difficult to follow, but becomes boring. The book would be fine, if the reader enjoys Monty Python type humor. Otherwise, it is a total waste of time.

Brilliant Writing and Performance

Douglas Adams performing his own writing is fantastic. I usually enjoy authors reading for an audiobook. This is the most entertaining and active reading of Hitchhiker's I've ever heard. Give it a shot! if you like the books, you'll laugh at this.

Douglas Adams as speaker

This is the first few chapters of one ofy favorite DA books, Life, the universe and everything. That book is available as an audiobook narrated by the author. Except for the audience reactions, LUaU is far superior.

It's more Hitchhiker's Guie!

It's hard to write a review for something so clearly for people who will already enjoy the work in question. If you don't know the Hitchhiker's Guide, this isn't a great place to start. If you do, then you'll enjoy this.

Is there really anything else to be said? It's wonderful!
