Publisher's summary

Martha Carrier was one of the first women to be accused, tried, and hanged as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts. Like her mother, young Sarah Carrier is bright and willful, openly challenging the small, brutal world in which they live. Often at odds with one another, mother and daughter are forced to stand together against the escalating hysteria of the trials and the superstitious tyranny that led to the torture and imprisonment of more than 200 people accused of witchcraft. This is the story of Martha's courageous defiance and ultimate death, as told by the daughter who survived.

Kathleen Kent is a 10th generation descendent of Martha Carrier. She is also a natural-born storyteller, and in her first novel, she paints a haunting portrait, not just of Puritan New England, but also of one family's deep and abiding love in the face of fear and persecution

The Heretic's Daughter

From the minuet I turned on my Zen to listen to; The Heretic's Daughter; I was captured. I enjoy reading Historical Fiction and this is to be one of the best. I went on the internet to find other book by Kathleen Kent only to find that this is her first book. I sure hope that she continues to write. I am looking forward to reading her next book. Mare Winningham was an excellent narrator and brought the story to life. I would highly recommend it to everyone.

Tragic History

Bigotry, greed, envy, arrogance sew the seeds of dark shameful deeds done in the name of righteousness. Won't we ever learn. A tale for today.

Enjoyed !

Very good narration. It could be a little slow at times. Perhaps author made the prison scenes slow purposefully to demonstrate how time was so slow while imprisoned in Salem under terrible conditions (?) Affective.

I don't like music in books!

Overall this book was good. I would be better by removing the music that has no purpose.

The book subtly reminds us to consider our ancestor's history - what happened in our families that effects us without us really giving thought to it. Both of my grandparents have passed now but while listening to this book, I reflected in stories they told me about their parents and grandparents.

Haunting!

This was a dark but enlightening book about the witch trials in Mass. The narration was very good and the author told a fascinating story.

Second Time Listening To This Book

I really enjoyed this book both times I have read it. Historically accurate information worked into a fictional story that is wonderfully performed.

Wicked lies

Wow, amazing how one's life and family can be utterly destroyed by malicious lies, jealousy and ignorance.

Good story

This is a great view of the happenings during the sale witch trials...my only negative comment would be still not knowing the importance of the red book and the history of the father...still a good story...
