Publisher's summary

The third novel in the Adrien English series finds the "ill-starred and bookish" mystery writer and bookseller battling demons - maybe literally. After bookstore clerk Angus flees following terrifying death threats, Adrien must contend with a mysterious Satanic cult, a hot and handsome university professor, and his on-again/off-again relationship with closeted LAPD Homicide Detective Jake Riordan. And, oh, yes, murder...

EXCELLENT. BRILLIANT AUTHOR!

Awesome story. The plot is sooo fantastic. I find Adrien a very interesting character. He's smart and a really good amateur sleuth. Full of energy and enthusiasm to pursue the villain/culprit and solve the crime. Jake, on the other hand is a disappointment with his fears and his unwillingness to come out from the closet. He shows his concern for Adrien but at the same time he is not very supportive with Adrien. I hope that with time he will come to terms with his life. Well performed by Chris Paton. Good series.

This is my least favorite of this series

This is my least favorite of this series just because there isn't enough AdrienxJake, and Jake being super horrible.
Chris Patton is awesome as usual.

A really great way to spend 8 hours!

Listening to book 3 is where I finally start to relate and even like Adrien. He's not a super loveable character for me in the first 2 books but he does care about the people around him and he has such a curious little mind that I do find it believable that he would just keep digging himself into these types of situations with murder and Mayhem.

It's a mystery book so there's lots of drama in near misses, death threads, secret societies, and dead bodies but it also has a witty sense of humor. I loved Adrien trying to deal with the workers the agency kept sending him to fill in for Angus and he's inner monologue found me with a smile on my face more than once.

Chris Patton is an excellent narrator, I will definitely be checking out his other work. He makes distinguished voices for all of the main and supporting characters and how those voices haven't changed in the past 3 installments is amazing. He's Jake voice is a special favorite of mine.

on to the 4th book!

Great story. Great narration.

Nice and twisty plot. Mystery. Romance. Dash of humor. Adrien is well thought out character, and the story flows well.

Brilliant!

I had long ago given up on the m/m genre, whether the stories be paranormal or suspenseful or merely contemporary romance, because they all started to run together... just the same old stuff. I've recently discovered, however, that in giving up all together I've been missing out on the writing brilliance of Josh Lanyon.

The Hell You Say is the 3rd book in the Adrien English Mystery series and, so far, my favorite. This story of occult and murder is action packed and fast paced, and simply amazing. Exciting, intriguing, humorous, steamy, and at times even poignant... to say this was entertaining is to say the least!

The audio version is very, very good! Chris Patton's voice is seductive and comfortable and appealing. He does an amazing job of bringing the characters to life, and I can't imagine a more perfect voice for this series.

I love Adrien English!

As usual, this series continues to impress!

Definitely a good book in the series, made so because of the character of Adrien English. There is lots and lots of humour and witty comments - Adrien is the king of the fast comeback!

It's a thriller mystery although with a little less action than previous books and Adrien doesn't seem to be getting himself into so much direct trouble. There is lots of sleuthing as he tries to help his bookshop assistant who is part of a cult and accused of a crime Adrien doesn't think he committed.

At first I wondered why Adrien was so passionate about getting involved but I think his nature didn't give him any choice! As a writer of mysteries he doesn't have it in him just to sit back and not follow the clues.

Jake only makes a minimal appearance in this book. I would have like there to be more on-page Jake although he was an a*****!

All in all - a great book, a mystery not a romance. The ending was a little bit fast and sudden but luckily there was another book for me to launch straight into!

The narration captures the essence of Adrien. The other characters are voiced well too - Guy, with his slight British accent and Lisa.

Love these books

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

All the Adrien "with an e" English books are great. The story lines and the romance is great. I re-read and re-listen to them frequently

Who was your favorite character and why?

Adrien of course. He is funny, whitty, and brave without trying to be.

Which character – as performed by Chris Patton – was your favorite?

You know what ALL OF THEM. I have bought so many audibles in the last few months and so many of them I can't even finish the performances are so horrible the sound of their voices gets on my nerves and I don't finish, because if I do it will ruin the book that I loved reading.

Chris Patton is excellent in all ways - his characters, the sound of his voice, the emotion all of it. I so wish he had a lot more books in this genre for me to buy. I'd buy them, no doubt.

a bit dark

Another mystery involving cults and crazy people.
Heart wrenching events that made this book a turning point in the series. Some OMG moments and Oh NO don't do it.
I love Lisa, you can see how much she loves her son, even if she live in La la land.

Chris Patton is still great.

Cool mystery, simply perfect narration

What made the experience of listening to The Hell You Say the most enjoyable?

Chris Patton's narration. Such a marvel! and of course he had the best material to work with. I love the book and had very high expectations which were met by Chris' narration and more.

What did you like best about this story?

What i like best about this book (3rd in a series of 5) are the mystery (which is really cool) and the introduction of Adrien's new family (which provides a much needed comic relief). In addition, there is the story of what is going on between Adrien and Jake (some tough decisions are made in this book), and that part is emotionally intense. I admire Josh Lanyon's writing for weaving all of the above together seamlessly.

What about Chris Patton’s performance did you like?

I truly like everything about Chris Patton's performance, and he gets better and better with every book in this series. I enjoy in particular the voice nuances, which give each character a distinct voice that is completely in sync with what i imagined. My personal favorite is Jake's voice. The scenes between Adrien and Jake (everyday interaction and erotic) are crucial to the understanding of these characters, and especially for Jake, whose inner thoughts we don't have access to. Since these books mean so much to me, i felt apprehensive when i started listening to Fatal Shadows (book 1), and to A Dangerous Thing (book 2), because there are specific scenes that have this perfect clarity. Never fear, Chris' narration is wonderful! Any doubt i might have had evaporated while listening to Fatal Shadows, but with The Hell You Say i now feel that i completely trust Chris Patton with any of my favorite scenes.

If you could take any character from The Hell You Say out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Jake. I'd like to talk to him about stuff. And since he's been thrashing about inside, it seems that he might welcome being able to openly talk to someone, without fear of repercussions. It might make him feel less lonely (hey, this *is* fiction).
