Story
Patrick and Clare wake up trapped in a basement, a thin wall separating their cells. Their captor is mysteriously absent, which at first seems like a blessing. As more time passes with no food or water, they begin to realize a clock is ticking for their survival. Combining their intelligence and determination, the two begin plotting an escape from their shared prison. Overcoming each obstacle only presents another obstacle standing in the way of their freedom. It will take all of their ingenuity and strength to find their way out of this mess.

Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

Thirty-two-year-old Jess Abbot has lost everything: her job, her apartment, and - most heart-wrenching - her eight-year-old son, Chance, to a tragic accident. Haunted by memories and grief, Jess packs what’s left and heads for the small mountain town of Pine Lake, where she takes a position as caregiver to an eccentric old woman. As seen on The Travel Channel’s The Dead Files, My Haunted House and the Animal Planet’s The Haunted, Hanover Haunting will leave you sleeping with the lights on. The haunting was so extreme, Amy Allen from The Dead Files warned DeAnna, “There are five men here and they all want you dead!” As DeAnna Simpson stood on the sidewalk, she knew she had to own the house on Maple Avenue. It called to her in a way she couldn’t explain. What she didn’t realize was that her dream home was filled with unspeakable evil.

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Light Ghost Story
Any additional comments?
I love old fashioned ghost stories so I jumped at the chance to listen to The Haunting of Maple Mansion by Carrie Bates. The premise is not a bad one, with an unknown presence living in an old mansion that appears to little kids asking for money and spooks the adults until they leave the house after living there only a few months.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Lindsey Dorcus who did an admirable job. Lindsey had good pace and enunciated clearly. I just wish there was more inflection her voice.
This short story runs at just over 1 hour, which is appropriate considering it read like an episode of the 1960's TV show "The Twilight Zone" or more recently, Ghost Hunters. If you enjoy those types of show, you will probably enjoy The Haunting of Maple Mansion.

Bad ghost
Well written but so much more story could have been written. I want more! Is there a part 2 coming?

The Haunting of Maple Mansion review.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Haunting of Maple Mansion to be better than the print version?
I have to say about the same.
What did you like best about this story?
Everything. This is really a great story.
Have you listened to any of Lindsey Dorcus’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I haven't.
If you could take any character from The Haunting of Maple Mansion out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Rebecca Jackson from the prologue. She's interesting.
Any additional comments?
I liked this. Five stars.
