Publisher's Summary

Audie Award, Fiction, 2013

Margaret Atwood's popular dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale explores a broad range of issues relating to power, gender and religious politics. Multiple Golden Globe award-winner Claire Danes (Romeo and Juliet, The Hours) gives a stirring performance of this classic in speculative fiction, one of the most powerful and widely read novels of our time.

After a staged terrorist attack kills the President and most of Congress, the government is deposed and taken over by the oppressive and all controlling Republic of Gilead. Offred, now a Handmaid serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife, can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name. Despite the danger, Offred learns to navigate the intimate secrets of those who control her every move, risking her life in breaking the rules in hopes of ending this oppression.

What the Critics Say

“Claire Danes sparkles in this performance…Danes’s Offred is complex, and her flashes of intense strength highlight her vulnerability. This is a consuming listen, thanks to Danes’s emotional subtleties.” (AudioFile)

    "Handmaids Tale"

Beautiful use of prose, but rather boring. I only finished it because once I start a book I finish it.

    "Startling futuristic tale of subjugation"

Interesting but repetitive writing style. Play on words was overused; a little goes a long way. Last chapter was the best.

    "Awesome performance. Terrible end"

Nothing even happens in the story, just a snapshot into this alternate reality. Superb performance by Claire Danes

    "OK but sad"

After a while both the thick use of metaphor and.Clalire Danes' voice got a bit much for me. At times so apparent and pretentious, I saw the author through the story. Generally a sad and disgusting tale which leads to no resolution, good or bad. That let me down as well. But I stuck it out and probably won't watch the series.

    "Very good book"

I enjoyed Claire Danes as the reader! The story is very plausible as no one knows the future. But it does hit on some major points. For example, when the collapse of the government occurs the writer says they will "blame it on Islamic radicals." Just as they have been since this book was written 30 years ago.

"If you have seen the show..."

There are always numerous arguments around the "movie vs book" version of things. I am not arguing one way or the other. I am sharing my experience in hope that it will help someone else.

In regards to the main character's portrayal. I listened to the book on audible. I read parts of it, but listened to most of it. Claire Danes does a wonderful job. She does portray moments differently than Elisabeth Moss does in the show version. I found both of them to be thought-provoking, engaging, and enjoyable when I suspended my expectations for either and instead enjoyed them as two separate works of art.

On Margaret Atwood- I cannot wait to read more of her work!

"Still thinking about the What Ifs"

This book is a trip. It was a little rough to get into, and a little hard to keep up with the back and forth, but I ate up the last half. It's not for everyone, but it's a good read. Think Pilgrims meet modern 2017 and creates a retro totalitarian society- from a first person female view. I'm still reeling from it.

    "Devoured it!"

Claire Danes delivers the emotions of this text with clarity and authenticity. Her voice is very expressive and she shines in the role of the Narrator.

With the current political climate, it is relevant to consider how government and communities view reproductive health, women’s rights and our political freedoms.

    "gripping"

Claire Danes did a superb job narrating this classic. I was gripped from the very first chapter and could not let go. and in this time of the trumpian regime, there are so many teams in line with current events that it almost had a prescience.
