Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Margaret Atwood’s modern classic is one of the most stunning and powerful works of speculative fiction ever written, and it took a lot of careful consideration to determine who would best narrate this important book. Claire Danes elevates the frightening dystopic vision by lending a sheen of reality with her performance. She doesn't act, and she doesn't need to. She recounts. She breathes out the tale as if she is living it. Resigned, beaten down, traveling through hell by putting one step ahead of the other. I was utterly convinced by her performance. —Emily

Publisher's Summary

Audie Award, Fiction, 2013

Margaret Atwood's popular dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale explores a broad range of issues relating to power, gender and religious politics. Multiple Golden Globe award-winner Claire Danes (Romeo and Juliet, The Hours) gives a stirring performance of this classic in speculative fiction, one of the most powerful and widely read novels of our time.

After a staged terrorist attack kills the President and most of Congress, the government is deposed and taken over by the oppressive and all controlling Republic of Gilead. Offred, now a Handmaid serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife, can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name. Despite the danger, Offred learns to navigate the intimate secrets of those who control her every move, risking her life in breaking the rules in hopes of ending this oppression.

What the Critics Say

“Claire Danes sparkles in this performance…Danes’s Offred is complex, and her flashes of intense strength highlight her vulnerability. This is a consuming listen, thanks to Danes’s emotional subtleties.” (AudioFile)

    "Appropriate for our time"

I read this book nearly 20 years ago and it scared me then. Now, listening to the excellent performance by Claire Danes, it even scares me more. The rigidity of fanaticism and willful ignorance embodied in this book is present in the 21st-century. It's not much of a leap to imagine suspension of the US Constitution and intolerant leadership convinced that the world would be best run by them.

Being a woman is tough enough, but when our rights are taken from us completely it is cause for concern and alarm. A must read for all.

    "Amazing"

The writing of this book is nothing short of remarkable. From the actual writing style to the story itself. With today's political environment it makes the story even more intriguing and somewhat terrifying. The cherry on the top is Claire Danes' fantastic narration. Among the best I've ever heard.

Excellently written, brilliantly narrated. Loved it and did not want it to end. Frighteningly easy to identify with the characters.

"Loved this book and Claire Danes"
What made the experience of listening to The Handmaid's Tale the most enjoyable?

Claire Danes captured the character. She reads as a perfect characterization. I relate with the character. Her thoughts are almost exactly what I would think.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found this book to be a little to possible in our day and time. It feels like Germany in the 30's or possible in our circumstances today. There are hints from individuals who would like a society demonstrated in this book.

    Any additional comments?

I must admit I was disappointed with the end. But still well worth it.

    "I want more!"

Very compelling book, I was on the edge of my seat. I wish there was more, but I suppose that's what the screen adaptations will be for.

"Absolutely wonderful & then the ending"

This book and performance by Claire Danes is amazing. You can picture everything that is described in detail. I loved every minute until the end...why Margaret, why did you end such a great book like this? It will make you crazy, but doesn't ruin the whole story.

    "Woah..."

Loved it! Great piece with incredible writing! Sometimes I had to go back 30 seconds or so to follow along. The story would skip from memories to present (which was actually in another time)....crazy.

"Well written story but way too dark"
    Any additional comments?

The performance is outstanding, and book is well written but it's very very very depressing.
This book is a frustrating read, everything about it, is depressing, the world is such a sad, dark, and frustrating place to live that I couldn't finish reading it.
I felt myself spiraling downward with every chapter.
The book is written in a way that reveals information about the world and why it is the way it is very gradually, hence making the reader curious and wanting to listen more to find out why.
My curiosity got me only so far, at the end I decided I can't handle the frustration and depression any longer.
