Publisher's Summary

After fleeing from an abusive husband accused of murder, Celia Merrill becomes embroiled in a Spanish Civil War.

Celia's two sons march under opposing banners, whilst her twin daughters take different paths; one to the Catholic Church and the other to the battlefields. And in the shadow of war, a sinister villain from the past resurfaces with the sole purpose of destroying the entire family.

Too Many Implausible Decisions in This Story

We did not finish this book. A weak, insipid main character, who makes a fatal choice at the beginning that we could not quite believe, followed by many other such events--too many to draw us into the story. Characters were not nuanced, and sometimes the author made us endure painfully slow scenes with a blow-by-blow we weren't interested in. We didn't get to the end of Part One.

Well told story with great narrator.

The author captures the human cost of the civil war and shows that there are no winners - except perhaps those who find the courage to carry on with their lives in spite of the brutality and their own miscalculation.

AWFUL READER

Any additional comments?

This book desperately needed a good editor, and a good narrator. The text was scattered with mis-used words and appalling mispronunciations. (arthuritis!). The narrator chose to use cheeping, little girly voices which grated on the nerves. All attempts at regional accents were laughable. I gave up half way through - not really having any interest in what happened to the protagonists.<br/>The story might have been passable with a different writer and different narrator.

Limited

An entertaining story but spoilt by basic writing style and poor standard of narration. Both became grating after a while and I abandoned the book about 30% into it.
