Publisher's summary

Two cousins, Rory and Arden, lie unconscious in a hospital burn unit. The fire, which broke out in their shared college dorm room, killed another student, and the police want answers. Tension between Rory and Arden's parents was already at an all-time high before the fire, owing to a recent financial crisis and the decline of the family business. As the parents huddle anxiously in the waiting room, carefully avoiding the subject of their own unraveling relationships, disturbing truths come to light. This is the deeply moving story of a family's struggle to hold together while their secrets threaten to tear them apart.

Carla Buckley is the author of The Deepest Secret, Invisible, and The Things That Keep Us Here, which was nominated for a Thriller Award as a best first novel and the Ohioana Book Award for fiction.

I could not stop listening.

This is the first time I have ever written a full review despite having been listening to audiobooks for many years. This book was so suspenseful, it's storyline so engaging and it's characters so well-developed, I could not stop listening. I liked it to the point of distraction! I highly recommend it.

Wow, great book!

Great production, the narrators did a wonderful job, portraying their characters well enough to make them seem real! Very engaging story, with a great ending. The only very minor criticism I might add would be that I mixed up the characters some, but that is probably my fault, there are many parallels and similarities between the families involved. I would highly recommend this audiobook, primarily to women, I suspect my husband would consider it a "chick" book, but that's not a negative. The character development is so very good, with all the twists and turns long relationships carry with them. Very, very good audiobook!

A Little Like a Soap Opera

Any additional comments?

This book was a T-ball game trying to be a baseball game. Not very convincing but as long as you are there to be a spectator - it moves along well enough. I guess.

So sad!

I really liked this book a lot. The narration was impeccable. The story was different and very interesting. I was surprised I liked it so much because typically prefer more action and less drama, but there was a lot of suspense throughout and it was hard to stop listening. I will try other books by this author, and definitely look for more read by these narrators.

A very good listen

This book was well worth listening too. I was drawn in to the swirling dynamics of all the people involved. A warning be prepared to cry.

Long struggle to a hasty finish

The story is good with a theme that reminds us how we often miss obvious cues about our children and family. However, a bit unrealistic in the current private school environment where dyslexia is quick to be identified.
The conclusion, after such a long build-up was hasty and left unanswered questions.

Awake till 2 AM!

This book kept me enthralled until I finally finished listening at 2:00 am. Moving, suspenseful , emotional... I have college aged daughters which added angst knowing that we never really know what is going on in their worlds, even though we want to believe they are happy and adjusted and more mature than they truly can be at that age.
