Publisher's Summary

A foundling, an old book of dark fairy tales, a secret garden, a maze, an aristocratic family, a love denied, a mystery - The Forgotten Garden is a captivating, atmospheric, and a compulsive listen about the past, ghosts, family, and memories from best-selling author Kate Morton.

Thirty-eight year old Cassandra is lost, alone, and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident 10 years ago, feels like she has lost everything known and dear to her.

But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Inheriting a book of dark and intriguing fairytales written by Eliza Makepeace Rutherford - the Victorian authoress who disappeared mysteriously in the early 20th century - as well as a cliff-top cottage on the other side of the world, Cassandra takes her courage in both hands to follow in the footsteps of Nell, on a quest to find out the truth about their history, their family and their past; little knowing that in the process, she will also discover a new life for herself.

    "A must listen!"

This book had twists and turns right up to the end! I never wanted to stop listening to it. The writing style was great too. The plot was complex and so detailed that I was able to create the world in my minds eye. I would read this book a million times over if I could! The narrators voice makes or breaks an audiobook for me. I wish Caroline Lee could read all the books I’m interested in! Her accent made the book all the more real for me.

    "Morbid and derivative"

Cornwall should not sound like Ireland. The French word for doll should not sound like the baby word for excrement. Do your research and don't attempt accents you can't deliver. The labyrinthine and strained plot had me hoping that all the characters would come to no good! And that's about what happened to most.

    "Enchanting "

A mystery of why a four year old girl is abandoned on an Australian dock in 1913 unfolds over several time lines with a secret garden, a wealthy family with dark secrets, a fairy tale "authoress", and meticulous and lovely storytelling. I loved it. The narrator was perfect!

A great story and listen, but rubbish American accents. I couldn’t tell if Caroline Lee was making fun or just couldn’t manage it.

    "Excellent Stories!!"

Interesting use of time shift that tells so many stories from many vantage points. Intricate, layered and fascinating. So very well done. Just wanted to throttle the evil mother and sometimes characters not telling all right then. But it all contributed to a complex and intriguing story upon story upon story. Very beautiful. Wish for such a neatly tied happy ending for my life stories!!

The first half of the book is a little slow. Once the mystery got going, it was way more interesting. I have to say that some of the phrases in the book were beautiful.

    "Great fairly tales!"

The stories were confusing going back and forth in time, that being said, the fairy tales written by the "Authoress" were wonderful.

Extended family sagas are not my usual genre but I enjoyed this from beginning to end. Beautifully written, well constructed, original storyline, unobtrusive narration. Looking for further Kate Morton

    "Wince!"

Nice story....however.... The Australian narrator's attempts at the West country and Northern accents are hilariously bad, at one point morphing between Irish, Scottish, Liverpudlian and a "Kevin and Perry-esque" mancunian all in one sentence. Was akin to listening to someone singing 'off key' for several hours!

    "Forgotten Garden or Secret Garden?"

Lots of nice twists in this but the jumping back and forwards in time could sometimes hold up the flow of the story. Characters were well described and the whole story was enjoyable if a little trite in the end.
The reader seemed to struggle with the Cornish accents, I'm sure they don't really talk like that! Otherwise a good read.
