Publisher's summary

Verity Beaumont has suffered domineering men most of her life; first with her father and then with her husband. Free from both men, she has finally found peace even meeting a kind and hard-working gentleman who just might be the perfect father her young son so desperately needs. But as she dares look to the future, her carefully ordered world is shattered when her dead husband returns.

After six years away, Rufus Beaumont, Duke of Blackburn, returns to claim his place and protect his family. Only, the life he finds is not the life he left, and he must convince his wife that their marriage is worth fighting for; that he’s not the man he was.

When the truth about what happened to him leaks out, he must prove that not everything about him, especially his love for her, is a lie.

This is a definite must read/listen

I've read Darcy Burke before, but never listened to any of her Untouchables series...Oh what a fool I've been!! It was soo good and I'm such a picky listener. If you have a whiny voice or have one thing that takes me out of the story - I'm out. I'm that ADHD when it comes to listening, so I was pleasantly amazed when I got to read this. I've never heard Marian Hussey narrate before and if that's legit NOT her real accent...I'd be really shocked. THAT is what kept me in the story, she did other voices and emotes so well that I didn't have to wonder who she was doing. People know I've been given an audio to review and absolutely hated and said it - so I'm honest about it but this was spectacular.

Okay, about the story itself. This has some drama, romance and suspense (sidenote I love suspense!!!) Verity believes that her husband from America is dead from the war and her and her young son are just now settling down. She's out from her tyrannical father's rule, but then the extraordinary happens...her husband Rufus shows up and he's not the same man he was when he left. He's been tortured in America and he's brought that home with him, but he tries to convince Verity that he wants to give her a different lifestyle!! I mean, wouldn't you? His only thought is to give Verity a good home and she's very leery of that and makes it known. He brought back those scars, the trauma and with it some secrets that he feels he can't tell her - so he doesn't!! There's one particular scene where his interaction with his son was so overwhelming I wanted to cry.

This is the ninth book - think about that and there's no slowing down that I can see and I'm coming in on the ninth! So, for me personally to be immersed in this world and storyline and think that it was THIS good being the ninth in the series...I'd kind of like to read/listen to the first.

my favorite

this was far more my favorite. a little adventure/excitement And different from the other books. It's nice to have a variety within this series. I like that there was less seduction more adventure that breaks the whole series up.

Perfect Historical Story!

This was my first Darcy Burke's book and won't be the last! This is the book 9 of The Untouchables Series. I haven't read the first books in the Series, but I'd love to. You can read this story as a standalone, but I believe it's better to read the first books in the Series to recognize the characters from them. This Historical Romance story is really beautifully written. I loved the characters. The scenery is well described. The storyline is really captivating and intriguing. I totally recommend this audiobook. The narration was well done and easy to listen. Marian Hussey has a great voice, quiet and sweet, perfect for this story. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Another great story

As always Darcy does not disappoint. Verity’s husband disappears 6 1/2 years ago and She is ready to put the past behind her. That is until her husband shows up and her life changes in ways she never thought possible. A man who claims to be her husband is kind and thoughtful, totally the opposite of who her husband was. Can she let her guard down and accept this man and the Happiness he brings to her life? Thanks Darcy for another beautiful love story.
