Publisher's Summary

In The Doll, a waterlogged notebook is washed ashore. Its pages tell a dark story of obsession and jealousy, but the fate of its narrator is a mystery. Many of the stories in this haunting collection have only recently been discovered and most were written early in Daphne du Maurier's career. Yet they display her mastery of atmosphere, tension and intrigue.

Perhaps not the best of Daphne du Maurier stories, but still worth listening. At times the narrator sounds a little like Anne Atkins of Thought for the Day fame.

    Any additional comments?

Insightful, intelligent, acutely well-observed, wickedly funny, disturbing, haunting, even terrifying in places. Although best known for her romantic, historical bodice-rippers I sometimes think Du Maurier is at her most effective in her collections of short stories. I have yet to read one that I haven't found thought-provoking and stayed with me for a long time after reading.
Beautifully narrated by Hattie Morahan. I love the intelligent clarity of her voice.

"An interesting collectio of du Maurier stories."

This is an excellently read collection of du Maurier stories in which she explores different relationships, emphasising her skill as a short story writer.

I loved this collection of early short stories by Daphne Du Maurier and thought some of them could be ranked amongst her best. My particular favourites were the one about the couple going away for the weekend; the story of an affair in letters; and the final monologue. I thought the narrator was superb! My only criticism - I wish there had been a slightly longer gap between stories. But that's minor. This was a very great listening pleasure for me.
