Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: In this fascinating look into a unique mind, Jeff Woodman becomes Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old with Asperger's Syndrome. Never before have I felt so much like I was experiencing the world from someone else's perspective. Christopher's frustrations, social anxieties, and logic felt like my own in this powerful performance. —Diana Dapito

Publisher's Summary

Fifteen-year-old Christopher Boone has Asperger's Syndrome, a condition similar to autism. He doesn't like to be touched or meet new people, he cannot make small talk, and he hates the colors brown and yellow. He is a math whiz with a very logical brain who loves solving puzzles that have definite answers.

One night, he observes that the neighbor's dog has been killed, since it is not moving and has a large garden fork stuck in its body. Christopher knows this is wrong. He has never left his street on his own before, but now he'll have to in order to find out who killed the dog. What he discovers will shake the very foundation of his perfectly ordered life.

Critically acclaimed author Mark Haddon, a two-time BAFTA winner, crafts a stunning masterpiece that is funny, honest, and incredibly moving.

    "Loved this book!"
Would you listen to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time again? Why?

Definitely. It was very entertaining and heartwarming. I felt so much more educated about what it must be like to be autistic.

What other book might you compare The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time to and why?

    Can't think of any

What does Jeff Woodman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His accent; his dramatization. He really brought it to life

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    not sure

"Should not be listened to in one sitting!"

Make sure you have a game or something to do, because I recommend doing something between chapters. It gives your brain time to process what it just heard.

"Did not live up to the billing"

This was a disappointment. I was hoping for something new, so I fought thru the first couple hours... but this book never gets better. I think everyone gives this one high marks because it features a boy with some developmental limitations. I was so glad when this one was over... save your credit, buy Flanagan's Narrow Road to The Deep North instead.

    "Love it or Hate it"
If you could sum up The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in three words, what would they be?

    Dysfunctional family dynamics

Which character – as performed by Jeff Woodman – was your favorite?

The autistic male was my favorite, and the main, character

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I listened to it over a period of days. It did not compel me to keep listening all at one time.

    Any additional comments?

There were things in this book that bothered me. The fact of the mother's inability to deal with her child due to his disability was extremely annoying to me, perhaps because I have an autistic grandson. However, there were many dysfunctions in this family, and hers was only one of them.

    "too many F words"

story and narration were very well done, but the repeated "f-words" did nothing to help the storyline

    "Great story, unnecessary cussing"

This is an amazing story, full of unnecessary derogatory cussing in the dialogue. It would have been one thing if it was here/there, but it was like most every adult character had to use loads of colorful words to express their feelings. As a mother of a 'spectrum' child, I felt the main character was very well reflective of what I deal with, and the stress of living with a 'spectrum' child was also well reflected.

    "Good book but..."

This was a fascinating read but I started to wonder if the author was attempting to win a bet about how many times he could fit the f-word into the book. I'd guess he won the bet.

    "Great book!!"

I just finished listening to this book! As someone who is blind, and has other disabilities, I can relate to Christopher's struggle... it's hilarious, sad, and charming. A MUST listen for anyone!
