Story
In the summer of 1928, sixteen-year-old Minka was looking forward to a sewing class picnic. This would be a rare chance to put aside farm chores, don a pretty dress, and enjoy an outing with other girls. It would be a day to remember. And it was - but not in the way Minka had dreamed. Cornered by a stranger in the woods, the young girl was assaulted. Minka still believed that the stork brought babies; she would not discover for months that she was pregnant.

Story
Julie would remember her happy days at Aunt Cordelia’s forever. Running through the spacious rooms, singing on rainy nights in front of the blazing fireplace. There were rides in the woods on Peter the Great, the races with Danny Trevort. Maybe best of all were the precious moments alone in her room at night, gazing at the sea of stars. But there was sadness too - the painful jealousy Julie felt after her sister got married, the tragic death of a schoolmate, and the bitter disappointment of her first love. Sometimes it all seemed like too much to handle.

Early in the Great War, men left Britain’s factories in droves to enlist. Struggling to keep up production, arsenals hired women to build the weapons the military urgently needed. “Be the Girl Behind the Man Behind the Gun,” the recruitment posters beckoned. Thousands of women—cooks, maids, shopgirls, and housewives—answered their nation’s call. A good story with a lot of re-telling
it was a good story, short, with a lot of my favorite characters. there was a lot of explanation in background story from when Sylvia was little, the stories unfortunately overlap quite a bit I was disappointed to hear so much that I had already heard in the other books I had listened to. I think the thing that frustrated me the most about this story was the fact that it was copied for audible off of cassettes and there are a number of times when the says turn cassette over and this is the end of cassette 5 that's kind of annoying they could have edited that out!

Great story. Cassette?
I love Jennifer Chivarini‘s writing style and as a quilter I love the subject matter. I would’ve liked to see some modern technology used so that at the end of every “side of the cassette” we didn’t have a voice come in asking us to turn it over to the next side of the cassette.

Beautiful story-lots of threads.
I live to sew and sew to live. I love being able to listen to these wonderful stories of women lives, friendships and challenges while I'm sewing. You really don't need to know how to sew or quilt to appreciate thesae stories. I have also listened while driving and not wanted to get out of the car after an entire day of driving.

Unprofessional recording
Don’t misunderstand, I adore Jennifer Chiaverini’s books, including the Elm Creek Quilters Series. My disappointment lies in the fact that the recording was simply lifted from the old cassette version. The beautiful story is caustically interrupted with instructions regarding the cassette - “forward to the end of the cassette”, “rewind”, “turn the cassette over”. This is the first time I have had a problem with an Audiobooks product; it did a real injustice to Ms. Chiaverini’s fine story. I requested a refund and it was posted promptly.

a pleasure to listen to
I had read these books many years ago and enjoyed them very much so listening to them while I work on my own quilts is a real treat. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the series.

Great listen
A great listen it made me cry. The old bits where it says to turn over cassette were a blast from the past. We have it much better withAudible . I loved this story it touched home I had to also make peace with the past after starting this book. It is like spending time with friende, on to the. Nextel m creek story.

Just Good
I did not like the interruptions telling me end of side... turn over.... kind of annoying. Otherwise I love these stories.

Needs editing
I have read several of the Elm Creek Quilter books. This is the first time I was told to change the side of the cassette while listening on audible. The audio needs to be edited.
