Publisher's Summary

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

Blackly comic, thought-provoking, and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults.

    "Really Enjoyed It!"

I never read the Harry Potter series, my kids were too old at the time and its not my genre. However, I can see from her adult books that JK Rowling is a gifted author. She develops great characters and interesting storylines, intersecting them all. She has great insight into why people behave the way they do. This is a story about a like little town where everyone has some connection to their neighbors and nothing is what it seems to be to. She describes what goes on "behind closed doors". The narrator was excellent bringing all the characters to life. I did not want this book to end!

    "Stellar"

I wasn't sure what to expect of this book before I started it. From reading the summary it sounded like it might be a fun and entertaining story and it is. However, it is also so much more than that.

JK Rowling excels at character development. Her capacity to create characters who are so complex and relatable has always amazed me. This book is primarily about relationships. But it is also about identity, about friendship, judgement, hate, loathing, and love. It's about people. It's also an incredibly engaging story that captured me from beginning to end.
I realize that this sort of book may not appeal to everyone. But if you are the type of reader who is interested in rich character development and the complexity of human relationships in all their forms, you might enjoy this gem.

I think Ms. Rowling is a master wordsmith however, I struggled with this story. A bit slow and confusing at the beginning. I look forward to her next book though. The narrator Tom Hollander is superb!

"such a sad commentary on society"

A really heartbreaking view of how we look away at things that make us uncomfortable, taking action only after it's too late.

    Story
"Pagford- a zillion light years away from Hogwarts"

I love and admire JK Rowling, & she is an incredibly talented writer with a vast range. Even before our son was born, my wife & I read the Potter books, and loved the movies. I'd finished the second Robert Galbraith novel before realizing it was a pseudonymous way to publish a new series for Rowling. And I've been jonesing for the next novel of that series.

I'm not sure why I've waited so long to tackle The Casual Vacancy. It is undoubtedly a superior piece of writing with deep, deeeeeep characters and storylines. Quality is top tier.

But I'd be lying if I didn't say it was a difficult read, at many junctures. I had to walk away a couple of times due to its deepest darkest - but it's very, very real ("Fats" would say "authentic")- subject matter.

Still, it manages to lay bare many of the festering facts that bubble up in every community, without ever preaching or presenting anyone as unscathed or truly innocent. It's a powerful, often painful, book. I see Wikipedia has labeled it as a "tragicomedy", which goes to show how foolish labels often are. There's not much comedy here. Prepare yourself for a whole heaping of reality, though. And do not doubt JK...she has serious mojo in those writing chops, and she can tackle anything. But "feel good" this is not. Excellent. But not heart warming.

    "Fear & Loathing in Oagford"

I hated this book. While Rowlings crafted a story, it was shocking to me that the book, overall, had so few redemptive qualities. It seemed to me to be an exercise in displaying & highlighting all the worst traits that we humans are burdened by, with no attempt to balance that very depressing picture with anything that it is worthwhile, decent or good. I feel sullied & encumbered by having read this. I intend to read some decent literature in the hope of recovering

"Could not get into the story"
What disappointed you about The Casual Vacancy?

I love just about everything else she has written and tried to like this but could not get into the story after the first few hours. Very slow start.

I made it through five chapters and had to give up. I'm a fan of all her other work, but this one was so...dull.

    "Disappointed"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The novel is very well written - as all of J.K. Rowling's novels are - but I was very disappointed in the story line.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was - in my opinion - just as disappointing as the rest of the book.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No, I would not go see this book as a movie.

"This is reality but not for everyone..."
What made the experience of listening to The Casual Vacancy the most enjoyable?

I prefer audible books because it breathes life into the characters and story...the reader of this book, Tom Hollander, was brilliant! From the narrating to the character's performed, he was brilliant! From somber, to anger - he gave this book the narrating it deserves. I'm not sure if anyone else would have done this book justice like Tom Hollander did.

What did you like best about this story?

This book challenged me into looking at the dark side of people's lives and the way we judge and are judged. This book takes a leering look into some very dark places and it really opened my eyes. J.K. Rowling is an amazing writer...I almost didn't get this audible book, but I am so glad I did. I am not a huge fan of Harry Potter, but this woman, J.K., knows how to write! Wow! To go from the fantasy world of Harry Potter to this very realistic view of how some people live and how/why they ended up the way they did - she is brilliant! I highly recommend this book!

Which character – as performed by Tom Hollander – was your favorite?

he did a great job with ALL of the characters....
