Publisher's summary

Everyone's life is governed by an internal code of conduct. Some call it morality. Others call it religion. But Bros in the know call this holy grail the Bro Code.

Historically a spoken tradition passed from one generation to the next, the official code of conduct for Bros appears here in its published form for the first time ever. By upholding the tenets of this sacred and legendary document, any dude can learn to achieve Bro-dom.

Fun, but starts to get repetitive

A fun farce, but after the first 45 mins you can start to predict what's coming. But still entertaining.

If you love How I Met Your Mother...

... you'll love this. I found myself laughing out loud for most of the book-- Neil Patrick Harris' reading is hilarious, and when I finished it the first time I started it right over again. I have a friend who bought a paperback of the book, and I'm so glad I got the audiobook instead- NPH's reading elevates this book from "pretty funny" to outright hilarity. If you're not familiar with the show, the book's subject and the rules he outlines are indeed sexist: it's from the perspective of guys trying to get laid, and includes rules like the old "Bros before ho's". But it's taken to a ridiculous, comical extreme, and NPH's reading in a dramatically too-serious manner really brings out the comedy. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and highly recommend it to any fan of NPH or How I Met Your Mother.

About what you might suspect

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Entertaining, but pretty much standard issue misogyny

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I liked how it was organized like a constitution - but the reading became a bit tiresome.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Neil Patrick Harris?

Yes - he has nice delivery, and I think the limitations were limited to the material

Was The Bro Code worth the listening time?

Sure

Any additional comments?

nope

Something just didn't work

The show HIMYM is much better than the book. I am a fan of the Barney Stensen character, but this book is just poor.

I don't think it made me laugh once and that is all the book is meant to do.

I wanted to like the book, that is why I bought it. Unfortunately it just doesn't work. Save your money. Trust me. Most people don't go back to rave about bad books in the comments. Take my word, that is why there weren't many comments when I bought the book.

LEGEN...DARY

Not only is this book amazing; the fact that NPH narrated just increases the awesome factor.

Smaller Doses

My opinion is biased, because of my love for the show How I Met Your Mother. That said I loved this, Neil Patrick Harris was great, and all the entries were hilarious and very creative! I just personally didn't find listening to the whole thing in one sitting a good idea. I found it to be more fitting for a bathroom book.

Funny shtuff

If you like the Barney character on 'How I Met Your Mother', this book is hilarious. If you don't... why not?

FYI, many of the anecdotes, asides, and caveats make more sense if you know the details of particular episodes of the show - i.e. (SPOILER ALERT!) the first time Barney sleeps with Robin.

But please, take this book as a joke, not words to live by. Some of the advice is sage ("Never sleep with your Bro's sister"), but more of it is goofy. Not that that's a bad thing. If more people lived this way... it would be a weirder world.

Good Book Bro!

If you could sum up The Bro Code in three words, what would they be?

Humorous, Profound, and Indispensible

What other book might you compare The Bro Code to and why?

The Bro Code is, at its heart, The Bible for bros. Contained in its hour and change of audio are contained some one-hundred and fifty articles and various adenda, each designed to aid bros live better lives and comport themselves with the appropriate level of "bro-ness" in any given situation.

What does Neil Patrick Harris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As Neil Patrick Harris is, literally, the voice of Barney Stinson, we have the right to expect a performance that even Stinson himself would have approved of. . . and we are not disappointed. Harris' delivery is excellent and will leave you rolling with laughter as soon as you crack the digital pages of this singularly funny digital book. In all honesty he could probably make the phone book sound jaunty and, if not actually side splitting, then at least deserving of a chuckle or two.

Who was the most memorable character of The Bro Code and why?

Barnabas Stinson is, without a doubt, the most memorable character in The Bro Code, and not because he is very likely the only one either. If this sacred canon is to be believed, then he is, in fact, its progenitor and sole founder and thus is worthy of the respect and veneration of all bros everywhere.

not even close to being a favorite

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

We love "How I Met Your Mother" and the Barney Stinson character, but the audio book fell short.

What was most disappointing about Barney Stinson’s story?

I think for us, the Bro codes are more amusing when it is imbedded in a larger situation.
