Publisher's summary

The beloved humorist and bestselling author returns with his most riotous collection of essays to date.

Starting with his trademark outdoorsman's wit, Patrick F. McManus's newest collection ponders the strange allure of the RV, the existential implications of being lost, the baffling tendency of animals to outsmart those who wish to hunt them, and the singular pleasure of doubling the size of every fish one doesn't actually catch.

Combining the curmudgeonly voice of Dave Barry and the innocent tone of Garrison Keillor, McManus brilliantly captures the everyday absurdities that comprise our existence. Alongside his humor, McManus's inimitable vision consistently evokes a childlike wonder at the natural world. Even if we are running low on food, the compass is broken, and we are fairly certain we have just spotted a family of Sasquatches frolicking in the treetops, The Bear in the Attic makes the outdoors seem wildly irresistible.

Classic McManus

The only difference between this and most of his early work is that he adds a few longer, more intricate stories, which is a nice change.

Great traditional story telling

In this collection of tales, the one of the adopted bear is really good, and I like the way Patrick McManus threads together various small tales with the story of the bear.

As I try other 'comedy' writers, I am always amazed at Patrick McManus' ability to tell such good stories without ever resorting to crudeness, foul language, or blatant sex talk. So, I come back and buy another of his books to 'unplug' for a while from stress.

While these stories are interesting for adults, there is no reason to worry about children overhearing them . . . these are cleaner than what passes for mainstream television these days. These are stories that could be played for the family on a long drive.

The narrator, Norman Dietz, is perfect for these tales!

good times

My family and I listened to this book on a roadtrip to california(from southern Utah) it was an 8 hour drive and this book made it so much fun, our favorite story was "the bear in the attic" there were some parts we laughed so hard it was almost dangerous to be driving, the narrater was great at making the fun characters in these stories come to life.
This is a great listen for the whole family, my boys were 13 and 10 at the time we listened to it and were thourally entertained. We also love to relisten to this book.

excellent book

I think I have found a new favorite author. found this book in my grandfather's house after he passed away. I borrowed the hard copy & decided to listen to it. I'm glad I did. These stories remind me of things my grandfather would talk about. I love it.

One of the Rancid Crabtree stories was so funny, we almost had to stop the car because we were laughing so hard.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Patrick McManus manages to write about life in a way that can be serious but always finds the humorous side.

Excellent Book and Narration!

I’ve always enjoyed Patrick McManus articles and books. This was excellent as well. And the Narrator must have sat and listened to what I can imagine Mr. McManus would sound like if he were to read his stories himself. I can’t wait to buy another!

Joe

Fourty years ago I read his early books to my kids, in this book, he mixes in his personal life with his zany friends. I would recommend this book to those that want to learn about his early life and how to tell storys.
