Publisher's Summary

The year 2060 is drawing to a close, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It's a time for loved ones to come together. But sometimes the deepest hatreds seethe within the closest relationships, and blood flows faster than water....

For Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the NYPSD, the job is a useful reminder of what she has to be grateful for this season. Hosting Roarke's big Irish family for the holiday may be challenging, but it's a joyful improvement on her own dark childhood.

Other couples aren't as lucky as Eve and Roarke. The Reinholds, for example, are lying on the floor of their Downing Street apartment, stabbed and bludgeoned almost beyond recognition. Those who knew them are stunned - and even more heartbroken by the overwhelming evidence that they were murdered by their own son. Twenty-six-year-old Jerry hadn't exactly made a good impression on all the bosses who fired him or the girlfriend who dumped him - but they didn't think he was capable of this.

Turns out Jerry is not only capable of brutality but taking a liking to it. With the money he's stolen from his parents, and a long list of grievances, he intends to finally make his mark on the world. Eve and her team already know the who, how, and why of this murder. What they need to pinpoint is where Jerry's going to strike next.

"Explicit, Vulgar Warning on This Book"
What did you like best about Thankless in Death? What did you like least?

Best is the progression of the characters - they change as years pass, just like humans do. Worst is the insane amount of vulgarity and on-and-on-and-on detailed violence. I've been reading (and recently listening) to this series since book 1 and as soon as this book started, I had to grab the phone and hit stop since my baby girl was in the car with me. This book needs a very strong warning on it. I skipped over more chapters of this book than any before. We get it - the guy is a sicko. Entire chapters detailing every hit, punch, cut, burn, balls smash, etc., were just unnecessary. Pardon the pun, but total over kill. If this had been my first exposure to this series, I'd never read/listen to another "In Death" book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    A Reacher book.

What aspect of Susan Ericksen’s performance would you have changed?

Peabody. Why she makes Peabody sound like a mentally challenged butch I'll never know. It is the single thing I hate about her performance on every book and I just about can't listen to them sometimes. She makes McNabb sound like a ditzy valley boy, too.

Did Thankless in Death inspire you to do anything?

Quit listening to Thankless in Death.

    Any additional comments?

Skip this one in the series. Read almost any one before this in this series.

    "Once again...another winner!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Most definitely! Unfortunately a topic we read about in today's world but we could see the effort that goes in to solving crime when the resources actually care about the victims.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the Irish family being a part of this story. They are so colorful while down to earth. It was also great to have the mix of family, friends, colleagues, and survivors of crimes as part of the holiday for giving thanks.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Susan Ericksen's performances are always great...I can always feel the characters up close and personal.

If you could take any character from Thankless in Death out to dinner, who would it be and why?

It would actually be Sinead because she is strong like Dallas but wise and tempered I believe due to a strong family. My other choice would be Morris, the medical examiner because he just seems a unique character with lots to share...there's much more to him.

    "Reminder"

This book is a reminder of the good and the bad in life. The people that risk their lives to keep us safe, and those that think nothing of life at all. JD Robb did a fabulous job of capturing values in this book ....with her usual extra special flare!!

"Great love, great story, great cop!"

I love Eve and Rourke, you can listen to these stories in any order and they all make sense. Great plot and I love listening to Eve track down her killer! This story even has a few teary-eyed moments. Susan Ericksen is Eve Dallas and all the other characters are realistic and recognizable as well, she does a great job! The killer in this story is especially heinous and Ms. Ericksen really shows her talent! Lastly, I love how Rourke loves Eve...it's special!

"Having A Very Hard Time Finishing This Book!!!!"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have listened to hundreds of books since 2007 and to more than 3 books a month! This is my first review ever! I just feel a bit cheated and upset. This is by the way the first J.D. Robb book I listened to. I bought it based on the overall ratings of 4.5-stars but now that I'm having such a hard time finishing the book, I went back to actually read some of the reviews to check if it's just me. Out of the first 2 pages of reviews that I read (20 reviews), 5 of them rated it 1-star overall, 3 of them rated it 2-star overall and 4 of them rated it 3-star overall. So 60% of these reviews (12 out of 20) gave it an overall ratings of 1 to 3 stars. How is it possible that the total ratings of this book are 4.5-stars? lots of time is being waisted on blah blah blah and I'm also having a very hard time listening to the different voices by Ms. Ericksen and can't figure out the different accents and who's who. Yes, I understand that one of the characters is Irish but what I hear is more then one different accent, and they all sound more like Middle Eastern / Turkish accents. No one has just a simple American accent. I feel that this book could have been written/read in about 10 hours rather than 13 hours and 22 minutes. Anyway, as I said it is my first review ever and I feel that I'm now blah blah blahing....I'm just really frustrated. I'm going to attempt to finish the book but am not sure if I'll be able to. Thanks

What was most disappointing about J. D. Robb’s story?

Many parts of the story are about nothing (remember the Seinfeld episode?) when one or two of the characters are just going on and on and saying nothing.

What didn’t you like about Susan Ericksen’s performance?

I'm so sorry to say this (my apologies Ms. Ericksen) but I didn't enjoy her performance.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I am going to try some other books by J.D.Robb. I'm sure I'll find some better ones. In fact I already have another one in my library.

    "Very poor choice"

Gratuitous sex, outlandish and abhorrent violence and generally improbable plot. The constant use of foul language was off putting. The narrator shrieked and screamed and her attempt at voice changes was often laughable and annoying.

    "Good listen"

A good addition to the series. The murderer is known from the beginning and the passages from his weird point of view are quite creepy. Lots of humour to balance out the horrors. I love the way the characters are growing and evolving and Eve's softer side is coming out more, there were some quite emotional moments too. Susan Ericksen's narration of this series is excellent.

"Great story, shame about the Narrator"
What didn’t you like about Susan Ericksen’s performance?

Her characterisation of 'Peabody' was dreadful - really whiney and nasal. Her Irish accent was dreadful and it really distracted me from the book

i love all of the J D Robb 'In Death' books but won't be listening to them again narrated by Susan Ericksen
