Publisher's summary

A collection of four chilling novels, ingeniously wrought gems of terror from the brilliantly imaginative number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman, Joe Hill.

"One of America's finest horror writers" (Time magazine), Joe Hill has been hailed among legendary talents such as Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, and Jonathan Lethem. In Strange Weather, this "compelling chronicler of human nature's continual war between good and evil" (Providence Journal-Bulletin), who "pushes genre conventions to new extremes" (New York Times Book Review), deftly expose the darkness that lies just beneath the surface of everyday life.

Snapshot, performed by Wil Wheaton, is the disturbing story of a Silicon Valley adolescent who finds himself threatened by The Phoenician, a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that erases memories snap by snap.

A young man takes to the skies to experience his first parachute jump...and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero's island of roiling vapor that seems animated by a mind of its own in Aloft, performed by Dennis Boutsikaris.

On a seemingly ordinary day in Boulder, Colorado, the clouds open up in a downpour of nails - splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover. Rain, performed by Kate Mulgrew, explores this escalating apocalyptic event as the deluge of nails spreads out across the country and around the world.

In Loaded, performed by Stephen Lang, a mall security guard in a coastal Florida town courageously stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun rights movement. But under the glare of the spotlights, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. When an out-of-control summer blaze approaches the town, he will reach for the gun again and embark on one last day of reckoning.

With an afterword from Joe Hill, read by the author.

Masterfully exploring classic literary themes through the prism of the supernatural, Strange Weather is a stellar collection from an artist who is "quite simply the best horror writer of our generation" (Michael Kortya).

Can’t keep Politics out of it.

I have to preface this by saying that mostly I enjoy Joe Hill’s books. But this one, he can’t keep politics out of it. He is still salty that Donald Trump won the election. (Just look at his twitter feed if you doubt it.) Now like Donald Trump or hate him, to each their own. But keep your politics out of our entertainment. All you manage to do is alienate the tens of millions of people that have opposing political beliefs. For me, what could’ve been an enjoyable collection of novellas was ruined because of your hate for a Democratically elected President. Now, the next time I look to buy a Joe Hill book, I won’t be thinking about Heart Shaped Box, Horns, or Twentieth Century Ghosts. I will be thinking of this book and spend my money elsewhere. I have to say that John Scalzi also dislikes our President, but his latest book, Head On, kept politics out of it and was enjoyable. I can respect and still support artists with differing opinions, but when you insult your readers, I will choose to support someone else’s art.

Political activism concealed within rubbish

This collection contains four short stories. One was only mildly interesting. Two were boring and the fourth was totally ludicrous. Beyond the stories themselves, I was very off-put by the incessant advancement of Joe Hill's political philosophy. I'm not an extremist in any way and I suspect that Mr. Hill and I might share a good many opinions, but I didn't like having an agenda being shoved down my throat under the guise of fiction. It's a shame, because I had high hopes for this collection, having enjoyed NOS4A2 quite a lot. In the future I will scrutinize reviews more closely before spending a credit on any material written by this author. On a positive note, I thought the narrators were very good, especially Wil Wheaton and Kate Mulgrew.

Left wing propaganda

If I had known that this was nothing but a left-wing hit piece, I would have never bought it.

Political/social agenda

I really get tired of authors who, instead of just a good story, are compelled to attempt to advance political and societal views.

Too many politics not enough story.

I typically like Joe Hill's work and I cannot complain about the performances. Since he picked some of my favorite readers. But I feel this series of novellas was way to focused on political climates and the authors political beliefs, than the stories he was attempting to bring to life. I guess I actually need to read descriptions for his work now.

Boring, full of liberal agenda

Honestly, I tried to get into the stories. I really wanted to like them. They were just bland. Add on the unabashed liberal agenda that was pushed and it just wasn’t good. Not even kind of.

Awful

A rare swing and miss by one of my favorite authors. If you are captivated by left wing propaganda wrapped in lazy and uninspired fiction, this book is for you. I believe fiction is better served when the author is not injecting his political hissy fit throughout. The afterward is equally mesmerizing, as Mr. Hill compares himself to Orson Wells and Neil Gaimen and waxes on about his mastery of both the novella and the novel. Get real.

Why?

Why do Joe Hill and his father feel the need to include their political views in their books now?! Sure they’re entitled to their own opinions, but it’s pretty shitty to alienate and offend half of your fans.
I liked Snapshot and Aloft, so a star for each. Loaded was garbage. Rain would have been alright if the politics had been left out. Also, I’m born and raised in Colorado and natives do not have a southern accent. I like Kate Mulgrew, but the accents were terrible.

Anti-conservative author

Liberal author incorporates anti-conservative elements into stories that serve no story purpose - used just to foster hate for the conservative. Regret spending the $$ and will never bother with him again.
