Publisher's summary

For the first time, an epic account of a boy born into a struggle for survival on the harsh and unforgiving American frontier, the story behind the legend of Smoke Jensen.... On the eve of the Civil War, Kirby Jensen is the youngest of three children living on a hardscrabble ranch in Southwestern Missouri. But in 1861, shots were fired in Charleston harbor, and Kirby's father and brother went to war.

Smoke Jensen, the Beginning follows the Jensen clan during these volatile years, from Civil War battles to border state raids to the kind of frontier justice achieved only by bullets and blood. William W. Johnstone chronicles the early years of Kirby Jensen - soon to be nicknamed Smoke - as he journeys from boyhood innocence into a manhood shaped by violence and a young man's thirst for justice. Filled with actual historical events and legendary characters, the story of Smoke Jensen's early years is a powerful, brutal and amazing American saga - the crowning achievement of America's most popular living Western writer.

Smoke initial appearance

The Johnston’s saga of the Jensens are all great. This establishes Smokes first elements of what made him and the individuals who helped!!

Incredible Origin

This story had a ton of excitement and only enhanced my love of the Johnstone heroes. After Those Jensen Boys, this has to be one of favorite books and I can’t wait to hear more of Smoke’s tale. I’m really eager to see how he meets Sally.

Gripping

Johnstone went back to tell the early life of Kirby (Smoke) Jensen and his family. The story begins in 1860-1961 on a ranch in southwestern Missouri. This was a violent time and place in American history.

The book is well written and what I like best about Johnstone’s books is the amount of research done to make an accurate historical novel. The book is full of historical events and facts. I do not feel the books are the same quality as when William Johnstone was writing them, but they are still easy to read and enjoyable.

The book is ten hours and three minutes. Jack Garrett does a good job narrating the story. Garrett is an actor and voice-over actor. He is a well-known audiobook narrator.

The Making of a Gunfighter,

Great Western and narration

I enjoyed this book and plan to enjoy more from this author. my only issue as an audible is that it was confusing at times as the narration of a sentence blended into another scene or situation without notice. One minute I'm with Smoke Jensen in one town, the next I'm with Jainey in another. Keeps me on my toes I suppose.

Smoke

Another great book about Smoke. This book has a lot of information on the early year's of Smokes life. This is a very interesting book to listen to. I highly recommend this book. There is a lot of information about Smoke's father in this book and how he met up with Preacher. Jack Garrett does a great job narraiting this book.
