Penelope Brook is caught in the malicious game of her betrothed. With little hope of salvaging her honor or retaining her freedom, Penelope fights instead for vengeance. But at what cost? Defying the laws of the ton, she seeks the aid of a notorious social exile. Her betrothed, however, is not so easily routed. His brutal machinations endanger all Penelope holds dear: a secret family legacy, liberty, reputation, and a tentative love for her roguish compatriot. In the sinister labyrinth of disgrace, nobility and survival, will the price of honor and revenge be too great?
I knew this story was going to be something different when the heroine ran up to the hero and asked him for help while obviously being chased by some rather disreputable men. He answered "No," and she kept on running. She's not some drop dead beauty and he's no paragon of virtue. So many romance novels read like "paint by numbers" storylines, and I really appreciate when an author comes at it from a totally unexpected angle.
