A peace that must be defended. A vow that must be broken.

It is the final decade of the ninth century. The Peace between Wessex and the Danes long-settled in the Danelaw erodes. A new onslaught of Danes attacks Angle-land, trying once and for all to destroy ælfred. Ceric of Kilton, now a young man, travels across Kingdoms to visit his friend, Hrald of Four Stones - and to see Ashild, whom he desires for his wife. But renewed hostilities threaten Ceric's hopes for deeper ties between strongholds.

And hundreds of leagues away on the Baltic island of Gotland, Hrald's father, Sidroc the Dane, must defy his Gods. The revered Hammer of Thor. The sacred Cross of the Christians. And the conflict that pits two beliefs, two great war-chiefs, and three young people against each other. A new generation beckons you....

Heavy is the heart

I will miss all the characters so much . It was a great ending but it was an ending. I thought this book the very best of the saga.

A Worthy Installment

Octavia is a marvel. Her stories are written in a beautiful prose. She is adept at painting pictures with perfect color and texture so readers feel actually present in the scenes as an invisible witness (a fly in the wall). Her stories are no less than simply riveting. I have to hand her the credit she deserves on one point: she knows which direction her audience would like events to unfold, and she gives them want they want, but not before taking them on a jolly good ride, heart-stoppingly close to the edge. It is this trick that makes her books addictive. She doesn’t use the cheap tricks sone authors use to elicit deep emotion. She relies, instead, on her skill as a story teller and she treats her characters and readers alike with her upmost respect. She herself is like the great ladies of the great halls she writes about. Inviting guests in to her grace with the promise of a heady but excellent mead.

The narrator, Nano Nagle, was born to read these stories to us. She is an artist who knows the characters, her regard of them remains consistent from one book to another. It is evident she deeply cares for and respects the people that Octavia writes about. Together, they create a perfect delight.

Slow start, becomes good

The first 2 hours or so I was catching up with the names and history of the characters.
After a time I began re-relating to them and following the storyline which was entertaining and kind of predictable.
Good nonetheless and wish another was available now so I wouldnt have to go thru rhis again

Consistently great story telling!

Never a lull, always engaging as we continue with the same characters. Most series have at least one book that gets boggy. Not so with Octavia!

Great series

I am really enjoying this whole story about this family and their off spring, and their relationships in Alfred's Wessex and the Baltic region.

More adventures…

What can I say, I love the young people in this book so much: Ceric, Harald and his sister Achield. Sp? I have listened to all 6 of these books for the past week and never has a book series captured my attention since Bernard Cornwall’s Saxon Stories known as The Last Kingdom on television. However, I so appreciate Randolph’s feminine gaze that touches me deeply. Ever since I was a wee girl, the history of the Angle-Saxons, Celts, Danes and the Norse have always captivated my imagination and after after a DNA test, I find that my DNA is Scottish, English, Norse and Swedish-Danish. I wonder how much my blood has been calling me to the land of all my ancestors. Until then, I will continue with the next Saga of the Circle of Ceridwen. Thank you Octavia Randolph for sharing with us readers your amazing talent.

Better than I expected!

After reading some of the reviews I almost didn’t listen to this book because I had really loved the others. I decided to trust the creativity of the author and give it a listen. While this book does introduce many née characters and bounce around a bit, I felt it only enhanced the continued story line and made it more interesting. Don’t be fooled by Mae sayers this book is worth reading!

Who, What, When Where's the editor?

It's like having a dream. So much fluff between such a little bit of story. The fluff isn't even historical or understandable. It goes from one character story to another without a heads up. It's like the author said good luck reading cause I don't know what I'm writing. I really tried to like this series and the first few books were ok but the last few books are full of fluff with little story. I can't do the last book unless the editor or author does a better job.

one more book please!??

I loved this well written series of books; the characters are amazing. I am so happy to see the next book is out.
Of course. I will wait for audible. I recommend this series for lovers of historical sagas that are well researched and developed. I will enjoy mine again and again. This narrator is the best I have heard and you will love her too.
