Publisher's summary

Robert Watts is having the worst day of his entire life. First he's laid off, then he finds out that his wife is having an affair, with his boss no less. And that's only the beginning.

Before the month is out, Robert finds himself alone to raise his daughter with no money, no job, and a house that is minutes from being repossessed. Just when he hits rock bottom, a strange visitor arrives at the doorstep of his soon to be foreclosed house with a letter from an aunt he didn't know existed.

The offer is simple: look after Aunt Ruth during her dying days, and in return Robert will be bequeathed the Harlop Estate in which she currently resides. It's a no-brainer and Robert jumps at the opportunity, equally motivated by the prospect of financial security as he is by a fresh start.

Problem is, it only takes a few nights in the Harlop Estate before he begins to question Aunt Ruth's claims that they are the home's only inhabitants.

It's the scratching he hears during the night, the voices that he can barely make out over the constant rain, and then there's the girl with the rat.

With their house foreclosed and their bank accounts liquidated, Robert and his daughter Amy desperately need a place to live. But the question Robert soon finds himself struggling with is whether living in the Harlop Estate is worth it, and if he can survive until Aunt Ruth passes to collect his inheritance.

Shallow Graves is the first book in the Haunted Series, chilling, gruesome, and truly haunting tales with a twist that you will never see coming. Download your copy today!

Nice and Spooky

A very good ghost story... It'll give you a little of the creeps to go along w/ the chills... Nice weaving of a story w/ a constant ramping up of tension and anxiety... Kinda has a The Shining feel... Robert is a very good flawed hero w/ some very good inner and outer dialogue...The twists and gotchas are exceptionally well done making for more than a few WTF moments... Tightly paced w/ narration quite suitable to the voice of the story... If you like a good ghost story you like this one...

The Marrow

Robert Watts was a accountant. This was not his night. He finds out his Wife had and is still is adulterous with his former boss (He had just gotten laid off after sixteen years, due to cutbacks), she had died in a car wreck and in the mail the following day was a credit card she had maxed to $20,000. How could he pay for their newley purchased house, bills, credit card, care for his Daughter Amy, of nine years old and with him no job? The next day a stranger brings a envelope to him. On it was just his name. In the letter, his Aunt Ruth explainshe is old and in her last month's of time. She asked him to come stay with her, care for her, help her to settle her estate and return when she died she would bequeath her entire estate to him. Robert has no Autn, for he was a only child, but the man insured it was him, and told Robert think on it for a few days. He decided he has no choice, for he was looking all they had to loose and he and Amy would be on the street, so he took her and drove to the Mansion to check it out. The Mansion exterior was in a sad, run down condition and the three story interior was something like of a harrow movie. Robert wanted to leave, but knew he'd had to do what had to be done, so he went in. This is the first book I have read by this Aurthor but, I was so intreged I didn't want to put it down. It was action, suspense and suprises at every turn, Bevin my with chapter one, but the most surprising was the ending. I have to confess, I wasn't expecting it. The plot completely blew my mind. I felt as though I was there with Robert and sorta felt his feelings. I will continue to read this Aurthor's books as !omg as they keep my interest. Some Writers books begin to get repetitive and loose my intrest, so I will see how it goes. Mr. Logan has written a great Novel. I recommend this as adult reading because of all the vulgarity and violence. This was a Audio Book and I don't know who the Narrator was, but he gets 5 Stars too from me.

Lousy Protagonist but....

I did not like the character of Robert Watts. He is a weak willed, sorry, unlikable character, just letting life wash over him without an attempt to fight for himself. And the beginning was long, tedious and really didn't add to the main story. Also, the situational premise of THIS book is pretty absurd.

Having said that - I will read the next book in this series since the overall premise, the ending, and other characters are compelling enough to make me willing to give it a second chance. the ending has a twist, that some might not have seen coming, but better yet (in my opinion) it introduced other characters that I hope will make the next book(s) better. It's a slog-fest but towards the end it gets better. Here's hoping the improvement continues

Definitely a Binge Liisten.

Would you listen to Shallow Graves again? Why?

I would listen to it again. I made it through the first time, I could do it again.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shallow Graves?

The straw that broke the camel's back - so to speak, was when a hint was given and I figured out something crucial to the story line. Hard to describe without giving any spoilers.

What three words best describe Michael Pauley’s performance?

WAY TOO DRAMATIC

I liked the sound of his voice, but the timbre and tone were fairly annoying. It seemed he was trying too hard to make the story sound ominous. The 'lilt' in his voice at the end of pretty much all of the suspenseful sentences, was too over the top.
Good thing I listen at bedtime, as I actually exclaimed out loud: 'For crying out loud, enough already!'
If he could tone that down, it would be great. He really has a nicely melodic voice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Seeing is not believing, believing is seeing.

Any additional comments?

I would recommend this highly. The story is great and the cliffhanger at the end let us know there are more to come. Try not to let the narrator decide the book outcome.
