A great read. Even the brutality was easier to take because of the lovely writing.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

There is a great short story inside this novel, but it was draped in so many layers of over-written prose that it was hard to find. The author is obviously and abundantly talented, but the book needed an editor with a red-pen and nothing to lose. I found the author to be unintentionally intrusive into the story.

For example, the main character, a fourteen year old girl raised in rural Mississippi, uses words like "desultory" (3 times) and "indolent" among others. Though she is clearly intelligent, often referring to Medea and Jason of mythological fame, nothing in the girl's background suggested she'd know and use such words. Their inclusion--when intermixed with the dialect and speech patterns of those around her--were jarring and unbelievable.

Also there were simply too many similes, metaphors, and Uber descriptive passages. Still, moments of literary genius do shine through.

Great narration. Took a little patience to get in into it, but worth it.

Dog fights that are graphic and mean . I cannot abide with anyone even in a story hurting dogs. I don't care what your culture is or how poor it is cruel and inhumane. Boo to this book. Bones is about right

    "Salvage The Bones"

Quite possibly the best audio recording I have ever experienced. Absolutely gripping-and heart stopping...this is one of those books that will stay with me till the end of time. So real, powerful and raw -wow.

Would you try another book from Jesmyn Ward and/or Cherise Boothe?

    No

Has Salvage the Bones turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, it didn't turn me off the loosely based on real life events genre. This author has a story to tell and I would have liked to hear it; she just didn't get it told in this book.

What didn’t you like about Cherise Boothe’s performance?

There is no character development whatsoever. You will not find a single word about how any character was feeling at any time. None. You wont see the word happy, sad, afraid, lonely, joyful, angry, worried, concerned, terrified, devastated, heartbroken, hopeful or .... you name any feeling word and you won't find it in this book. I never came to know the characters or care about them because they weren't really people with feelings, dreams, fears, wants, desires, etc. They were just names on a piece of paper whose one-dimensional dialogue was supposed to somehow tell a story that just didn't get told. I've already forgotten everything about this book, except that it wasn't about Katrina, it wasn't about poverty, or anything human. There was a lot of detail about dog fights, if that helps...

    Any additional comments?

It was a daily deal and not worth the $3.95. I'm thinking about returning it.

    "Heart rending"

The beauty of the language of this novel is stunningly matched by Boothe's narration. The cadence of her voice and the exquisite rendering of each character brings this heart breaking story to life. I highly recommend this book for those who appreciate the poetry of a well written novel.

Some of the metaphors are great, but the story and the characters are impossible to love.
