Publisher's Summary

Fans of Flowers in the Attic will relish this first book in V.C. Andrews’ haunting Landry Series.

Moving from the shadowy Louisiana bayous to the sun-washed opulence of New Orleans, this series spins a mesmerizing tale of passion and secrecy. Lovely, red-haired Ruby Landry’s early years have been shrouded in mystery. She trusts only her loving grandmother and her simple bayou life. But her past, darker than she could ever imagine, is waiting to overshadow her as she grows into a beautiful, accomplished young artist and moves into a sophisticated world.

Best-selling author V. C. Andrews’ talent for creating breathtaking tales of obsession is fully evident in Ruby. Narrator Barbara Rosenblat adds just the right touches of emotion, capturing Ruby’s dreams, joys and horrors.

    "Great Story! Bad Narration!"
If you could sum up Ruby in three words, what would they be?

    Girls innocence taken

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ruby?

How each place was described. I felt like I was there looking at it with her.

What didn’t you like about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance?

Too old for the book. You can actually hear her taking breaths and swallowing and even can hear her move her saliva around in her mouth. She shouldn't be narrating books.

If you could rename Ruby, what would you call it?

I don't think I would. Ruby is perfect.

    Any additional comments?

I love this series and have read the books over and over. I'm really not trying to be mean when describing the narrator, but it almost caused me to stop listening to this book that I love. I would like to see a better matched voice for the series. The voice was way to old for the teenage girl, Ruby.

    "Bad narrator"
    What disappointed you about Ruby?

This book is about a 15 year old girl. The woman who tells the story sounds old enough to be my grandmother. It makes it impossible to enjoy when listening when it sounds like a wishful granny. Common sense is to pair the voice as best you can with the main character . Poorly done. I have read this book several times and now after listening too it verbally my sense of enjoyment for the story is gone.

What did you like best about this story?

    Nothing

What didn’t you like about Barbara Rosenblat’s performance?

She's too old to read books for teenager girls.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Ruby?

    None

    "Loved the narration"

Despite what the others say I really thought the narrator brought the book to life. I was able to really get lost in the story and felt I was there. The only thing that I didn't like was I could here the narrator swallow and I have a pet peeve of hearing people eat chew or swallow and maybe it was more noticeable because I had earphones on? Other than that I loved the book and the narration! I wish audible had other books from the Landry series

    "Does story justice"
What did you love best about Ruby?

    all of it

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ruby?

spoilers-read it. My favorite VC Andrews book since I was 13 and I've read like 17 of her works.

What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The Cajun accent. Yes she is a bit older, but I'll trade that for her voice acting ability. I feel like I'm in the Louisiana Bayou.

If you could take any character from Ruby out to dinner, who would it be and why?

    Grandmere-she's really interesting.

    Any additional comments?

audible the rest of the series :(

    "Great story, so so narration"
Would you consider the audio edition of Ruby to be better than the print version?

No, I have read the Landry series, likely about 15 times. I am too familiar with each part of the story. The narration is bothering me too much.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Grandmere Catherine is the BEST! She did her best, in raising Ruby. And did what she thought was best. But of course we love our Ruby!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

So her voice is not the best match for a young girl, it doesn't match. Although, when she did the voices for the Cajun part of the family, she did it VERY well. I also didn't like when she voiced Lyle's voice, she made his voice one tone, like he was sleep walking or really drugged, but when she says something he says in a sleepy voice, then narrates that he said it "nervously" or "brightly".....its annoying, it ruins the character. I also don't like how she narrates something in the wrong tone, like when she is describing a calming view, but her pace is escalated and her tone is breathy, you would almost think something is about to happen(if you didn't know the story).

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, I know the book too well.

    Any additional comments?

why are the rest of the series not narrated?! BOOOO!!! :)

"Love the story, narration not so much"
Would you listen to Ruby again? Why?

I love the entire series of the Landry family but I'm not to keen on the narrator it could have been done better. You can hear the echo of her reading in the background which is distracting.

What did you like best about this story?

I love how well she lays out the story where you can picture it as your reading

Would you be willing to try another one of Barbara Rosenblat’s performances?

I'm not sure, I continued the story because I love the story it self

"Just as great the second time"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Yes! It absorbs you.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I love when she arrives in the Garden District.

    Any additional comments?

I loved the narrator's voice and am surprised so many people had negative comments. I didn't want a squeaky voiced teenager voicing it, even though the main character is a teenager. I associate VC Andrews with sexiness and the narrator has a sexy voice that reminds me of Kathleen Turner. That's what I want to hear when I'm listening to a dark thriller-esque romantic VC Andrews tale. I plan on finding any other books she voiced and listening to them.

    "A bit disappointing"

First, I often choose books *because* they are narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. She's one of my favorite readers! However, this one was a bit frustrating because I felt she was too melodramatic in the reading. Not usually an issue with her.

Second, the story was far too long and really dragged in the middle. The author could have cut several chapters and had a very good, concise, fast-paced story. Setting aside the quite lengthy gratuitous sex scenes, which I did fast forward, the middle chapters were so long and detailed and dragged out that I kept wishing this were a regular book I could just scan through and skip the boring/depressing parts. The author could use a good editor!

Then the ending was wrapped up quickly and vaguely without satisfactorily answering quite a few questions. I'm assuming the author was preparing for the next in the series and leaving things open for the sequel. But I will not be reading/listening to any of the rest of the series.
