Publisher's summary

Refuge, New Hampshire, is a small town. The kind found on postcards. Their biggest concern is the rowdy summertime revelers making their way up from Massachusetts and New York. And with most of the town's residents in neighboring Ashland, for the Fourth of July fireworks show, Refuge is quieter than usual. That is, until the Baptist church's bell starts ringing - on its own.

The bell chimes faster and faster, reaching a frenetic pace, as though rung by the Devil himself. But the bell is just the beginning. The air shimmers. The night-time sky fills with a burning red aurora. The moon, previously a crescent, is now full. And just hours after dusk, the sun returns to the sky, revealing an endless desert where there was once a mountainous pine forest.

Led by ex-Army Ranger turned surrealist painter, Griffin Butler, Sheriff Rebecca Rule and her deputy, Helena Frost, the residents of Refuge must weather an ever changing onslaught of otherworldly dangers while trying to uncover how and why the landscape beyond town shifts every time the church bell tolls.

As a sequence of horrific events threaten to destroy the town, the residents must band together, search for answers and find a way to defend their homes, or Refuge will be lost.

Refuge is a serialized novel, co-authored by #1 Amazon.com horror author, Jeremy Bishop, and five other authors, including Amazon.com best sellers Kane Gilmour and David McAfee, USA Today best seller, Robert Swartwood, and newcomer Daniel Boucher. The novel was released in five parts, every two weeks beginning in late 2013, but it is now available as one complete novel. So listen for the individual parts or the whole completed novel. Either way, you're in for a creepy ride.

Brilliant

If you are anything like me, you are looking at this and thinking.....five parts and five different authors, this is not going to work. But like me, you would be very wrong. It worked wonderfully, the authors really complimented each other and the story flows pretty flawlessly. Jeremy Bishop has once again created great, memorable characters and brought together a group of talented authors to tell an interesting tale.
This series captures your attention and imagination, you cannot help but wonder what is happening to the town of Refuge. I couldn't stop listening, I refused to sleep until I had finished. What a wild ride!
The only negative thing I can say is that it ends, like all good things. But I really hope we will see more of Refuge in the future, fingers crossed.
Jeffrey Kafer puts on a top-notch performance, I think everyone should listen to it.

I am still not so sure about this one...

What did you like best about Refuge Omnibus Edition? What did you like least?

The books spins off in so many ( sometimes wild directions ) that is it hard to find one point either way. This is an at times violent, jarring book, with a number of direction changes, well developed characters and surreal circumstances.
I enjoyed it for the most part, but it certainly does sound/feel like it was written by many different authors.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Not sure it could be the same book if it was altered. Maybe edited to be more linear, although I think the point is not to do that. It is also somewhat deriviative of some other " small town/altered realities" books I have listened to.
That said, it is sort of a "greatest hits' of that genre, and well done as such.

Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not that I recall, and he does a fine job here.

Could you see Refuge Omnibus Edition being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

SyFy with no names.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to give this offering a higher rating, but it spins abit too far out of control for my tastes. May just be mine. It sprawls, it's messy, but it is performed well, and on balance I recommend it.

BONG!

Loved it! I can't wait for the next installment. It started off a little slow, but by the time I got to the 5th book it was racing along. Very good narration, easy to listen to and plenty of difference between the characters. Recommended listen.

Fun for late-night listening...

Not intellectually stimulating but still fun to listen to. A mix of The Dome meets The Hunger Games meets The Lost World meets The Running Man. Predictable but none the less entertaining.

I want mooooore!

Seriously. It’s like riding a roller coaster that is so amazing that the moment you’re off of it you INSTANTLY want to get back on it again. So, that said, I’m off to ride this freaking awesome roller coaster again. Use the credit - it’s worth it.

Terrible ending

I suspect they were going to make it longer and then stopped. Some of the books were better than others.I think I would return it if I could.

It’s the reader

I forgot that, for me, I can’t stand Jeffery Kafer. After 10 minutes, he literally makes my ears hurt. And, IMHO, his character voice range is not any where near enough to carry out a story of this length. Unfortunately wIll be returning. I wish that I could give a review of the story but I didn’t hear enough of it to have an opinion, but Audible requires a rating for the story even though I have no idea how good it is.

Predictable but entertaining.

narrator was good
story was predictable but entertaining
wish they expressed the horror of the situation a bit better and showed what happened during the lax times to put a better emphasis on said horror. overall not something I would write home about but still held my interest.
