Publisher's summary

An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings and set them down in a diary.

Too bad it's abridged

Great narrator and sound quality. Story was hard to listen to at times, but never lost my interest. It's unfortunate that only an abridged version of the novel is available, as I would have preferred to have been able to hear the entire thing.

Shocking

I saw the movie at Sundance Film Festival and had to read the book that let to it. It was a short listen, but a good one. Sad and shocking at times, but a good memoir worth listening to. Stay on the lookout for the film!

A Good Read.

This is a very good read, but it is not for the fainthearted. It's graphic language and vivid portrayal of the life of a disadvantaged black teenage girl in New York City may give pause to some. Sadly, the author does not exaggerate. Precious' life is the life of far too many girls these days.

Gritty...but too short

I downloaded this book after seeing a preview of the film and I must say that the first-person narration gives it a richness that draws the listener in. However, I was disappointed that the audiobook was so short and that there wasn't any kind of epilogue.

Great Read

Although the movie Precious is a bit different from this original book, I enjoyed both very much. Sapphire not only did a great job writing the book but also does a great job with her narration.

Great story, terrible narration

I love this book so much I decided to teach it to my 11th grade class. Sadly, I could not listen to excerpts of the novel in class and was forced to read it to my students. It was read too rapidly and with zero emotion. Sapphire is a great writer, but should leave the reading to professionals.

Exciting and moving

This book was a refreshing look at the inner mind of a abused young woman finding her own words. I was moved from the beginning to the end and wanted to learn more when it was over. Superb and realistic writing of abuse first hand from the innocents mouth. I wanted to stand up for her and shout no more. I felt rage for the people who misused and misrepresented her. Kudos to the writer.
