Publisher's Summary

The Peace of Amiens has left Jack Aubrey with no ship, no enemy to pursue, and no possibility of prize money to supplement his meager income. His decision to seek refuge from his troubles, and creditors, in France proves doubly disastrous.

Don't miss the rest of the Aubrey/Maturin series.

What the Critics Say

"The best historical novels ever written." (The New York Times Book Review)
"No writer alive can move one as O'Brian can; no one can make you laugh so loud with hilarity, whiten your knuckles with unbearable tension or choke with emotion. He is the master." (Irish Times)

"Even better than the first book! "

Finally some female characters! And pretty good ones too. You get the sense P. O'B really challenged himself to make up for what the first book was lacking and perhaps brushed up in his Austin before writing this installment. We get to learn more of the mysterious doctor machurin and see a softer side of JA. Of course there is nautical adventure and historical detail aplenty. I really enjoyed this book, and am loving he series.

"Good but a little slow at times."

This was another good book in the series though there were some spots where it seemed to drag on and lose some continuity. All in all I am still enjoying the series and will continue to listen to them.

    "Excellent Book; Capitol Narration"

The book was very good and does not disappoint after Master and Commander. I shall not go into a critique of the book, but I will note this: it was more than a sea adventure. The characters are believable and interesting with a lot of depth. The immersion into life at sea is done wonderfully. O'Brian did a very good job.

The narration is also very commendable. Tull adds to the immersion with his masterful delivery of the story using very authentic-singing accents for the various characters, whether English, Irish, Scottish, French, or Spanish. Listening to these stories narrated by Tull is so immersive that I would regularly choose to listen rather than read the print myself.
I have only two complaints: Firstly, the audio quality is not all that good. Secondly, the audio book is not synced with the Kindle book.

    "I am in love..."

I feel like I have been waiting for a series like this all my life… Or at least all of my audiobook life. I have found my audiobook soulmate and the combination of Patrick O'Brien and Patrick Tull as well as the sheer tonnage still to go. I think I might just listen to this series over and over again instead trifling and scavenging with anything less… Which is everything else

"A terrific story of friendship, and sailing when Great Britain ruled the seas."

A terrific story of friendship, and sailing when England ruled the seas. Perfectly narrated by Patrick Tull. Historically true to the era, and seamanship. O'Brian's attention to detail of the tall ships of that time is well known and respected.

I'm a poor sleeper, and my nights are filled with these tales of "Lucky Jack" who is not always lucky in terms of finances, love, or the men he reports to at the Admiralty.
