Great Book, poor narration.

Sadly the narrative voice really doesn’t suit this book, it sounds really amateurish, like she’s reading it for the first time with no director. I’m on chapter three and think I’m going to have to ditch it because I can’t engage with it at all.

Brilliant story but horrendous narration

What did you like best about Polo? What did you like least?

A very entertaining story, a great follow on from Riders written true to form. With well rounded and entertaining characters. Very well written, with such great detail that it is easy to see it all played out in your minds eye.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Painful to listen to.

Any additional comments?

I’ve always loved Jilly Cooper books, and having read Polo many years ago I was delighted when I saw that it has been recorded for Audible.
However excitement quickly turned to disappointment, the narrator is just awful. Slow and almost monotonous, very poor character voices and very oddly timed inflections at times. There are so many more talented narrators that could do this book justice. I’ve tried to stick it out, hoping the narration will improve but no such luck. As such I’m returning the book ☹️😤

Great book, awful narration

I love Jilly's books and this one is no exception but, sorry Rebecca, the narration was dire. pronunciation and intonation were awful and on several occasions partial sentences were re-read.

narrator ruined my enjoyment

I love this book, I've read it many times. I was so excited to pre book one of my favourite authors....until I started to listen...dreadful narration, no emotion, names pronounced incorrectly, accents ridiculous, voices for characters were awful....
pity...great story but ruined by narration

Brilliant book but the narration completely ruins it

I was so happy to find Polo on Audible as it was one of my favourite books but the narration is so awful it has completely ruined it. The accents are appalling, certainly not the nationalities directed, towards the middle of the book the narrator gets muddled up between voices, narration is flat and toneless and it has completely ruined it for me. Very disappointed. I won’t buy anything narrated by this Rebecca Hyland again and will be returning my book.

Love Jilly, let down by awful narrator

Would you try another book written by Jilly Cooper or narrated by Rebecca Hyland?

I'll always go back to Jilly's books. Won't try anything narrated by Rebecca Hyland again though.

What did you like best about this story?

You get what you expect from these books! They are certainly of their time, but are still a great read.

What didn’t you like about Rebecca Hyland’s performance?

Repetition of ends of sentences, terrible accents, intonation and pronunciation. They even had to re-dub the name 'MacLeod' post-production as it was mispronounced throughout (although a few instances of this were missed - two even in the same conversation!) This makes for a very jarring listen.

Brilliant book, god awful narration.

Probably the worst narration I've ever heard. Jilly Cooper is wonderful, and I've waited so long for this to come to Audible. But if the rest of the Rutshire Chronicles come out with Rebecca Hyland narrating I'll definitely give them a miss.
Spoiler alert, Taggie Campbell-Black is butchered!!
